when i held my first contest i commented on everyones work. anyway, i thought that it said that according to ap that the judge is supposed to comment on all pieces as a commone curtesy.
i totally agree with you. if you're going to hold a contest you should try to comment on all poems.

I have been tempted to block (and even named-and-shamed a few in the old days!) contest holders such as those you describe. I certainly do not enter their contests again. It's also worth checking on their fave-list if a dreadful, mistake-filled poem has won gold over a far worthier entry, just to see if they're playing the "friends game" - also worth a block!!!!

Even though my contests can run a long time, and suffer setbacks, I have NEVER in four years failed to read an entry on purpose; the only time that happened was when I was left for a year without internet access, and with a computer! Even then I managed to get a friend to message the Mods, asking them to judge the contest in my stead! And no matter what my circumstances, I always aim to provide every entrant with a critique, not just a "nice poem" type comment.

Sadly though, because of the situation with lame hosts, and due to abusive entrants, many more people are opting to hold faves-only contests, or invite-only contests. I still keep mine open, though rarely run them now my other work commitments and writing commitments have so increased.

Even if you don't want to block a contest host who annoys you, you can alternatively keep a log book of such hosts, and use that reference list to avoid entering such contests in future.

One thing I am strict about, as are my peers, is that I won't ever award trophies to poems that have been entered in my contest with obvious, unamended typos in them. There's always enough time to correct a poem before a judge comments ~ and if the entrant cannot be bothered to present their best, and ensure their work is typo-proof at least, then why do they feel deserving of any accolade for sub-standard efforts?

I could go on and on with this subject but won't lol

I may write a list of people down from now on because it's just not fair when people go out of their ways to make a damn effort for someone ... same as deleting poems from contests ... what's the point in that?? Why not just comment and say how they could improve and be polite on someone's work... sometimes it's because narrow minded people cannot see what the poem is about. Yes I agree about the people who JUST invite friends for the sake of trophies... and delete other entries ... where's the talent in that?? lol xx

I know that sometimes I find it hard to give a sincere comment on every entry. I would rather give out 2 or 3 sincere comments than 20 comments that say awesome. Sometimes I find it hard to comment at all.

I also know that when I enter a contest and the judge does not comment I feel miffed. Ho hum..... I guess we are all human with feelings and judges are not above or below feeling the way they do
    at time of judging.....

Yes I know it can be hard to comment on some people's work... If I don't understand it I ask for it to be explained... improves my learning... I also add what I like about the poem, how the poem made me feel...what I saw from the poem...could be totally different from what it was meant to mean... and what I think they could improve on i.e more imagery, rhyme etc... Sometimes my comments are just rambles and pooh but if we try it at least shows the writer it was worth trying eh??

I know the feeling. Sometimes I don't comment, though I should. I promise from here on out I will make sure to comment all entries.

God, don't I know what you're referring to.

One of my pet hates on this site.
    That and...

No rhyme, no dirty pretty, no prose, no free verse,
no cliché, no erotica, no inspiration, no haikus

Only use 3 words, 12 lines maximum.

Write something amazing or you'll be DQ'd!
