yes i am familiar with the genre and with Mariza, she is perhaps the leading Fado performer now, it is not saudade but has many elements of a spiritual quality, very appealing for its depth of feelings...thank you...PK

To think that 60 years ago fado was thought of as an almost-exclusively male genre; then along came Amalia Rodrigues. Now we have Mariza, by whom I am totally captivated.

been there; you spurred me to go back and go over this oldie... http://allpoetry.com/poem/3459826 thanks... and nice foray into that language (I hope you have more luck with it than Burns did with English...! )

Lovely piece, performer, and music! Wish I had an inkling on the language...

It is fairly simple Portuguese. With the help of a dictionary I hazard the following translation (where you see an asterisk please refer to a comment at the bottom:
Trago um fado no meu canto
Canto a noite até ser dia
Do meu povo trago pranto
No meu canto a Mouraria
Tenho saudades de mim
Do meu amor, mais amado
Eu canto um país sem fim
O mar, a terra, o meu fado
Meu fado, meu fado, meu fado, meu fado
De mim só me falto eu
Senhora da minha vida
Do sonho, digo que é meu
E dou por mim já nascida
Trago um fado no meu canto
Na minh'alma vem guardado
Vem por dentro do meu espanto
A procura do meu fado
Meu fado, meu fado, meu fado, meu fado
I bring fado* in my song
Singing from night until day
Bringing tears from my people
In my song, Mouraria**
I am nostalgic for myself***
My love, most beloved
I sing a country without end
The sea, the earth, my fate*
My destiny*, my destiny, my destiny, my destiny
I miss only myself
Lady of my life
The dream which I say is mine
And I find I am already born
I bring fado in my song
In my soul, it is saved
It comes from within my astonishment
The search for my fate
My destiny, my destiny, my destiny, my destiny
* "Fado" has treble meanings in this song. It is, first of all, this style of singing. Secondly, it is a contraction of another word, which doesn't have a direct translation into English, but means a combination of loneliness, wistfulness, nostalgia for things lost in the past. Thirdly, it can mean fate or destiny.
** The "Moorish Quarter" of Lisbon.
*** The word "Saudades" in this line, is the word which philologists believe is the origin of the word "fado". See * above.

This has been making my hair stand on end today - a Sacred Harp version of Charles Wesley's hymn tune Idumea ( And Am I Born To Die ). Just a note to my friends, and to people on whose work I most often comment. I have been very tired lately, and unable to write. I have decided to stop worrying about the latter and take this opportunity to rest. Please don't worry too much if you don't hear from me very much for a while. I will still come and read yon Nov 12 12:20 AM, 100 words. → 19 comments, Add one?

Old news, I know, but I now have in my hands the back copies of Canadian Zen Haiku in which several of my haiku and senryu appear - four in the Autumn 2008 issue, six in the Summer 2009 issue. They are in English, French, and Scots, and have all been posted here at AP at one time or another. I have updated my webon Oct 31 1:08 PM, 100 words. → Make first comment?

Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer utters itself. So, a woman will lift her head from the sieve of her hands and stare at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift. Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth enters our hearton Oct 11 11:03 AM, 400 words. → 7 comments, Add one?
