trying to ignore the pain

black abyss
surrounded by throbbing reds and oranges,
lanced with sharp yellow and brilliant white.1

damned abscessed tooth
dormant for a year recent dental visit
exacerbated the crack
now I deal with the pain. 2

I may have to be here all night, to lay my head down puts uncomfortable pressure on my jaw. Last night saw 3 hours of fitful sleep, sitting up. Seems tonight will be much of the same. Oh yes, the clocks go back, so I get an extra hour LOL.3

What makes me most upset, is Sunday morning breakfast. Marti and I ritually go to breakfast on Sunday mornings and our local restaurant has just reopened. Tomorrow should prove interesting.4

Awww I'm sorry. You need to get that taken care of. Seriously. Abscesses are no joke. At least get some antibiotic and pain meds for now, if nothing else.
If you have to - go to the ER.

Remember - abscesses (tooth infections) can spread to your bloodstream and brain. Once the infection is in your brain, there is little chance for survival.

PLEASE, for me, get this taken care of. Now I'm all worried.

I had a tooth like that last year! Sucks!! They put a crown on it and the crown failed. Didn't have to have a root canal till the crown cracked do to a back mold. They fixed the crown for free but had to pay for a root canal...Go figure. Sorry Buddy for your pain that you are enduring 's

Sweetie, it's too late to avoid the fourth. If you keep avoiding, you'll have no choice but extraction. It's not gonna get better on it's own. It's only going to get worse.

you could try eating grits sorry, i don't mean to make light of a painful situation...Lord knows, toothache pain is about the worst! As you can see, I'm up late too...Insomnia has struck again, damn it. Well, at least I'm in good company, and darling, I do hope you get that tooth taken care of quick! Swish with salt water or drink some bourbon until you can (Bourbon and grits, now there's a good southern breakfast!)

Grits and bourbon, what happened to the brandy?

Cure for insomnia... sleep. I ruined my meditaion years ago by using it to fall asleep with. Even now years later when I meditate I have to conciously keep myself awake. This takes away from the meditative calm, having to work to stay awake.

As long as I get 5 hours I am good. Was hoping your new relationship would help with your insomnia. My maternal grandfather was the same, he would be up till 2 to 3 oclock. He taught me it wasn't insomnia unless I couldn't go to sleep when I was ready.

    OUCH!!

That's terrible!!! A toothache has to be one of the most horrific pains known to humanity. I should know, as I've suffered both traumas: childbirth and toothaches. I'd rather go through labor again than to be in your shoes. I have pity on you, my fellow wounded comrade. Hang tough!!
    Peace,

Thank you but I will pass on the labor pains too, if you don't mind. LOL
I'm on some kind of pain killer that seems to be more of a pain transducer, it creates aching out of sharp jabs.

Need to make it through till Monday. Dentist office opens then.

      Thanks for your support.

        OMG!!!

That is awful, knowing you have to get by with that throbbing pain until Monday. What a nightmare. I know how you must be feeling, believe me. Whatever you do, don't get on a plane. The altitude may cause your root cavaties below the gumline to explode, and it'll kill you for sure. If not, you'll want to shoot yourself in the jaw to end your miserable suffering... I once had a root canal explode on me, inflight, and if I'd had a pistol with me, it would have been all over. But I did go straight to the emergency room after landing in Houston after a flight from Sacramento. You're right about the pain meds. Just don't take too many, please!! We all want to see you back here on Tuesday(!!) Buddy, I really feel sorry for you!!
        Take care,

          OH DAMN,

it actually exploded? That had to be the worst ever. Now I'm feeling for you. No plane flights for me thanks and I'll remember NOT to go over the mountains.
Thanks much for thr heads up.

            You're welcome...

And I really like what cup-a-joe had to say, about drinking Brandy. I never tried that for toothaches. Your dentist can probably explain the phenomena of exploding root-canals much more scientifically. I wonder what would happen if you flew over a mountain? Would it be like one flying over the cuckoos nest, I wonder? Sorry, bad joke. I do hope you get well soon. Take care...

You actually can have serious issues with infected teeth (abscesses) and unfinished root canals or re-infected root canals on flights - due to the pressure. The air pressure is much more intense, I believe is the reason.

(I used to be the clinical manager for a pediatric dentist - now I am the marketing director).

My father once had a cracked tooth, just before we went on vacation. Our dentist told him that he better get that taken care of before we left or he'd be hijacking the plane.

It seems a lot of people have had toothaches. Very sad. Dental health is so poor, even in modern times with all the information, fluoride, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and dental care we have at our disposal.

A few tips for toothaches that are VERY IMPORTANT to remember:

#1 - DO NOT, under any circumstances, put aspirin or any other pain killers directly on your gums or tooth - it will burn the gingiva.

#2 - If you have any swelling, fever, puss, or bleeding, immediately get to a dentist (I mean IMMEDIATELY). If one is not available, go to the nearest emergency room. These are signs of an infection that could potentially spread to your brain or bloodstream.

#3 - Use topical anesthetics (numbing gels) sparingly and carefully. Remember that these gels will numb anything they come in contact with - including your lips, tongue, and throat - this makes it easier to choke, burn your soft tissues, or bite yourself uknowingly - so be extra careful.

#4 - Drink lukewarm liquids - nothing too hot or too cold.

#5 - Try to chew on the other side of your mouth until the problem is resolved.

#6 - Continue to clean around the affected area (no matter how painful that may be) - remember that plaque and buildup attract bacteria and yeast - which will only worsen your infection. Use a damp washcloth if that is all you can handle.

              Umm... okay. That's it.

Cavities only get worse, they will not stop growing or reverse themselves. So to prevent toothaches (which are caused when decay or cracks reach the nerve of the tooth) - have areas of concern taken care of BEFORE they reach the point of pain.

To prevent cavities and pain -
*Brush at least 2X every day, floss every night before you go to bed between any teeth that are flossing.

*Get a dental checkup every 6 months (it takes about 6 months for a cavity to form and begin to eat through the enamel of the tooth).

*Avoid sodas (soft drinks, pop, whatever you may call it), sugary juices and drinks, chewing gum (sugar-free included here), sticky candies (such as fruit snacks, jolly ranchers, caramel, taffy, you know...), suckers, too much of anything super acidic (tomatoes, oranges, orange juice, lemons, etc.).

*Eat lots of cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese - both contain ingredients that buffer the acids in other foods and in your saliva that can cause cavities.

I'm gonna get off my soapbox now. You know I love you guys.
