Memories of our england trip of 2004

We stayed in a cute little row house in lancaster, england.1

On the way to england, we flew to italy (It was Tara's first time there). My schedule was a bit busy for us, only 1 day in most towns, etc. We saw a lot of amazing stuff (rome, the amalfi coast) then crashed in Florence and decided to slow down.2

I remember shopping a lot on florence, we had a great time there. Fun street shops/etc. When I'd studied abroad and visited there several times I always thought it was a dirty/nasty city, so it was fun to see the nicer side of it. It is so busy and smoggy and full of people and cars though. But that makes it feel alive also...3

I remember playing starcraft with Mike & Martin & the other guys, and not sleeping for hours after I got home because the stupid little guys were running around when I closed my eyes still.4

Harry potter came out while we were in Bath. I remembers taying in line at midnight with all the dressed up british kids, it was so magical. And reading the first paragraph of the book into a phone message to my parents, since we got it 8 hours before them!5

On the way out of england we few to germany and did a bus trip along the "romantic road", a series of beautiful small towns between Munich and Frankfurt. Trying to leave england though, at luton airport our flight had closed already, so we had to pay big bucks and take the next flight out the next morning. So had to stay at this B&B I found that came and picked us up... it ended up being quite fun. Went for a nice run around their house, got to eat dinner with the family - it is always fun to see the local culture/etc.6

Munich was fun but very busy and urban, and I think we were getting sick of traveling at this point, especially of large towns. I remember going to the art museum and lots of families with children. We stayed near downtown on the 3rd story with (of course) no elevator - I was pretty strong by the end of this trip with heavy bags and no elevators.. Then we missed the first bus stop of the romantic road (very frustrating, after having missed the flight to germany too!) We took a train to Rothenburg, and had a grand time there. They had sneeballen which were gross things of dough. I remember their little church - Tara didn't want to pay to get in but I did and so she waited.7

Tara went on a run and met some guy who was there during WW2 and met some woman and stayed.8

We met up with the bus and saw the other fun towns on the way north. One stop was an estate where we stopped for 15 minutes, so Tara and I sprinted out, bought a special short-rate ticket from the office, and ran through the estate, lightning-style. Perfect for us 9

In Frankfurt, Tara's uncle Claus met us and drove us to Badorb. It was hard to find him because we only had a pay phone and we didn't know what each other looked like He was like 10 minutes late too, so we were getting very nervous. He drove like 120 miles per hours on the autobahn to badorb!10

Turns out he's an awesome architect, and was the mayor of the town. Everyone knew him and everywhere we went they waved and said hi. He gave us a lovely tour of town and we had a lot of good times dining and drinking too much jagermeister. They laughed at my attempts to speak german

Your trip sounds very interesting, Kevin. I was in Germany for a year back in 1957/58 when my 1st husband was stationed there. I loved it there but didn't get to see much since my hubby never would go anyplace. I bet things have sure changed since then.

It's a good idea to keep a journal of the things we want to remember. Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us

    do bist ein auto?

Trips to Germany are always a blast. Such friendly people. Loved reading this and remembering my summer in England and Wales in 2004. I should write mine down, too, before I forget it all. Thanks!

i am a car? Hmm, my german is rusty!

Yeah! I've been having trouble trying to remember these trips before they get 10+ years distant and I can't recall them at all. Now I can come back here and read about it and remember...

not rusty, that's what it says lol. one of the two non-swearing phrases I can remember in German. got me laughed at continuously by native speakers when I was over there.

yeah, I think it's brill you are recording it like this. So frustrating to forget, and pictures never seem to capture the in-person experience, which really irks me. My photos of Wales are almost boring, but standing in those same spots was overwhelming.
