Josef Menegle and the Holocaust

Hello, if you are looking at this, thank you for reading my journal.
This isn't necessarily one about my feelings, but my thoughts.
The other night, I watched horrer movie (really, it was bad) called "Unborn" and one of the main ideas of it was twins. In the movie, there was an old women who talked about her stay at Aushwitz and, because she was a feternal twin, a man named Josef Mengele took very much an interest in her and her brother. It talked about him conducting expiriments on her and her brother, trying to change their eye color1

Now, I took a certain intrest. First of all, nothing makes me more interested than torture and expirements, just sick intrests that is part of the reason I am an author. I wanted to look it up, to see what he did. Another reason is I was wondering if it was true or just horrer-movie fiction. Lastly, it interested becasue I am a twin, and it could give me some insight on my fate if I were to of been shipped to a concentration camp- if I would have been a jewish child during World War 2.2

It was real. Josef Mengele was a very real person. A very strange person. He was a stone-cold killer, and killed thousands of people at Aushwitz. He was a doctor, but the way he murdered most people is by sending them to the gas chambers. I read that, at one point in his career, he went to a children's block and drew a line five feet up. He sent every child who's head wouldn't reach the line to the chambers. Just that kind of cruelity made me cringe.3

But, there was one thing that made Joseph very interested, and that is the sight of twins. He would send people through the crowd of prisoners looking for them. He would take feternal, but it is identical that made his eyes light up. He would find them and take them to a labrotory, where he would conduct expirements. 4

I heard that he removed organs, while the child was stll awake. He would draw quarts of blood at a time, occasionally juicing a child completly of their blood and killing them. He would proform surgeris, inject chemicals into a twin's eyes to try to turn them from brown to blue. He would sometimes things to one twin and not so much to the other, to see how it effected them both. He isolated them, and injected them with some concojction just to cause incedible pain.5

But, to me, that is not what made this man so incredibly terrifying. It was the way he carried himself. Josef Menegle was a gentleman when he was around these children. He was very handsome, he gave them candy and seemed like a friendly person to them amoung the people at Auschwitz. Some of the younger children called him "Uncle Mengle" because they couldn't see behind this man's mask. To them, he was a good person.6

And yet hundreds of small children died by his hand.7

I was reading these things, and I couldn't help but wonder. If I was taken to a concentration camp, and I was young, which would I rather? Would I want to be found by Mengele? Or, would I want to live the lives thousands of others had to in concentration camps, hiding from him? The twins were granted more food. They could at least stay with their siblings. They didn't have to work, they got more respect and they were not going to be killed at the spur of the moment. They were both under the protection and in danger by Josef menegle. 8

I don't know which I prefer. I really don't like to think about myself in that situation, because it is so grusome. I am a little releived, I would not have to have my eyes tested, because they are all ready blue, so that would be a little pro. But, not really. The things that happened in those concentration camps are horribe and unspeakable, when a group of insane men gained power and used it. I think people take it for granted that we don't have to make those decisions. Our life is stable, it is rare that people need to live everyday in fear of dying or being tortured. 9

So, if you would comment, I'd like if you put yourself in the place of a pair of twins. Would you hide from Menegle, going to starve or possibly a gas chamber (a very commen fate for children of Auschwitz) or would you take your chances, point yourselves out and get a peice of candy from the mas murder, Josef Menegle?10

(A/N If anyone sees any wrong info, please tell me. I am pretty sure that got everything right, though.)

Yeah you got all of that right. That man was just evil, pure evil. I have a book on him, written by annother prisoner of war who was a doctor. He had to work with this evil man, doing all these experiments. It was very detailed, but the things they did sickened me. Mengele is a fascinating man to read about, but so cold. It's hard to believe humans can turn so wrong. I like what you wrote. It was very interesting

    • What is that book called? I'd be interested in readingit. Yes, he was a deranged person, but those types of people come every now and again. It was misfortunate that Hitler and Menegle popped up at the same time.

Thank you for your comment and for reading my journal. I apprciate it.

        http://www.amazon.com/Auschwitz-Eyewitness-Dr-Miklos-Nyiszli/dp/1559702028

This is the link to where you can get the book. It's fascinating, it really is. The book is simply called 'Auschwitz.'
        This is what the back of the book says;

'The extermination camp where 4 million people died. They died by gas, bullter, fire, disease, electric shock - or as victims of 'medical research.' Dr Miklos Nyiszli assisted the infamous Josef Mengele in these human experiments. He survived. And this is his story.'

I would defintly recommend reading it if you are intested in what went on in those places.

What gets me is these people who claim that these places never existed. All of the pictures, the eyewitness accounts. I fail to see how MILLIONS of people could be so wrong. What do you think about that?

  • Ah, Menegle, the real world mad scientist. He really was the epitome of what happens when the mind completely intellectualizes its surrounding. Vivisection, human experimentation, waking transplants...the dark side of science. Evil of that caliber is...disturbing, to say the least.
