One in Six Billion: Love and Hate

Did you know that there is currently 6.76 BILLION people currently residing on this earth? Amazing isn't it? People just like you and me (I hope there isn't too many people like me - that thought is somewhat... scary), living their lives - each experiencing moments that make them unique.

I believe that no matter who you are, where you live or what type of person you are, you have a story to tell. Everyone does. Even the old homeless guy on the street corner you drive past on your way to to work, or the ADHD kid that lives next door, or the woman that lives by herself.

Everyone has at least one life experience that is worthy to be given life on paper - to be immortalized through words.

This contest - the second in a series - is aimed to encourage YOU - the writer - to find these experiences and narrate them.

The focus of this second contest is LOVE and HATE. In my opinion, everyone will experience either or both of these intense emotions in their life.

You can fictionalise some components of the experience, but you must remain true to the telling of it. You can make your entry autobiographical (about you), non-fiction or fiction (using the experience to inspire a story).

I am allowing prewrites, but of the two entries permitted per person, one must be a new write. The prewrite must fit the requirements of the contest. Prewrites MUST have been written this year.

For both love and hate, I am looking for intensity of emotion - these are both on either ends of the emotional spectrum for good reason. I DO NOT want to see some lust-based romance or a story based simply on disliking someone.

LOVE and HATE are primal, raw emotions. I want to see stories that really capture this.

*

There will be a total of 10 'One in Six Billion' contests - each focusing on different types of life experience. The gold medal winner from each will be invited to resubmit their winning entry to a final, eleventh, contest for me to decide an overall winner for the series.

The overall winner will receive a prize package consisting of:

Gold Medal

A substantial quantity of points (yet to be decided)

Nomination to Spotlight of the winning story (subject to approval)

A one month Gold Membership (which I will purchase on your behalf)

Winning any of these ten contests will be your ticket to this grand final.

RULES:

1. By entering this contest, it is presumed you have read and understand all conditions of entry. By doing so, you accept that you may be DQ'ed should a rule not be adhered to.

2. A good standard of spelling, grammar and punctuation must be followed. Chat speak, sticky caps and other monstrosities will not be tolerated. Please proof-read your story before submission or at least work to edit it.

3. Stories must be based on a real life experience.

4. All genres acceptable. Please use appropriate categories if the story includes graphic descriptions.

5. Prewrites to have been written from 1st January 2009 onwards. Two story entries to consist of one prewrite and one new write, or two new writes. Contest will remain open until I have what I deem to be enough entries to fairly judge gold, silver and bronze.

6. Story must contain a minimum of 200 words and no more than 5000.

7. Entry can be in the form of a story, vignette, diary entry or non-fiction article. It can not be a rant, poem, script, speech/sermon, fan fiction or anything else not resembling the permitted forms.

8. Swearing and discrimination permitted ONLY if fundamental to the character or person portrayed AND is contained within quote marks as either dialogue or a direct quote.

Entries that do not follow these rules may be DQ'd without warning.

Entries will be judged on writing method, skill and style, especially as regards their 'story-telling' ability.

    Hello.

Pre-write's title is "I Remember Your Smile." I'm working on the new entry, but it will probably be a few days before it gets posted.

This contest will be a good one to look at time and again, to see what you can pull from the minds and hearts of Storywrite's members.

I don't know if I will enter, but I will definitely read.

  • Do you have to have the words Love and Hate in the story?

No - that are not required to be written, but if you want to use them, go ahead. All I specifically want is for people to capture the intensity of each of the emotions. One or both can be used, same for an experience that came as a result of each of these emotions.

  • It's both love and hate in one.

  • HANG ON SNOOPY...

I PROMISE YOU AN AMUSING NARRATION OF JUST THIS SORT TOMORROW OR TONGHT. I AM CURRENTLY OUT OF TOWN BUT ARRIVE BACK HOME LATE TONIGHT.
    BE PREPARED.

If you want to enter this, was it required you entered the one before it? Just wondering.

No - each one is a separate contest, each with an equal chance of placing and possibly winning gold. They are a series in the sense that they carry the same prompt type and will end in a grand final.

      I hope you enter.
