Halloween is based on a holiday where the membrane between the land of the dead and the land of the living is thinest. This explains the monsters and the offerings to make them go away. Modern Halloween has been a mockery of this, forever soiled by commecialism.
With that said, the contest is about fear and scary things. Words to the wise: give the graphic vile details a rest, true fear doesn't have to be gooey. Fear of death to doesn't impress me much without a show of some attachment to life. Try to work past these two common archetypes. I'll be interested what you do with it.
