I'm in one of those kind of moods again. Instead of venting it in my own writing this time I thought it would be fun to make a contest around it this time and read what other people's hungry, ugly, shadow sides have to say.
Just to be clear, your general prompt is eroticized, ecstatic, and/or ritual violence. Lustmord. Thrill killing. Serial murder. Bestial predation. Werebeasts, dragons, dinosaurs, anything big and hungry taking down its dinner, enjoying the aftermath. The Roman death circuses, the greatest form of participatory serial murder ever to exist. Psychotic fantasies of minor natural disasters to stave off a major one, or whatever other schizophrenic nightmare you care to invent. I want what I shouldn't want. I want to read the things you're afraid to write, afraid to let anyone see. Believe me, I've written worse. You should see what *I* don't let anyone see...
Obviously this is not a contest for minors, or for the squeamish. Also, just to be totally clear, I am not asking you to promote the dark side of life -- not only is that against AP's rules it's not exactly what I'm looking for. Report it, don't condemn it or condone it. It's like my Shadow contest I ran a while ago -- an exercise in painful self-honesty. In opening up and displaying that which we are usually conditioned to conceal, to hide, to shove away and ignore and pretend doesn't exist at all. This isn't a celebration of that aspect -- more like cancer surgery. Excise it with honesty.
That is your assignment. Show the truth of what hides in human hearts, even those which are otherwise "sane" and "normal". Everyone, even the meekest, most pacifistic person, has had a violent urge in their life. Everyone has a beast inside somewhere. You may cage it, chain it, lock it away so deep even you don't know it's there and don't believe me when I tell you it is -- but it is. Dig it out, put it on a shorter leash, take a good long look at it. I'll show you mine if you show me yours...
Here's some rules.
1.) No one under 18. The reasons for this should be obvious. If you have a ... particular reason for wanting to enter this contest that you think I would understand (*cough*) message me and we'll talk about it. But in general, no minors. I don't even want a hint of trouble with this one.
Apparently this needs to be said. It shouldn't, but it does. This rule has nothing to do with ageism. I do not believe that people under 18 are incapable of good writing. I do believe -- know -- that some people's parents monitor what they do on the Internet. I also know that those same parents often will not hesitate to explode at anyone who seems to be "corrupting" their precious child. I do not want to be the target of someone's pent-up need to blame their parenting mistakes on everyone but themselves. Frankly, I'd love to see more good writing by minors, but I'm honestly afraid that the contest will end up deleted or people will get censored if I just openly allow minors to enter. That might be a foolish fear, but I've had people's parents blow up at me before over much smaller things. So please don't send me angry messages accusing me of being a biased jerk. I am not.
2.) As I said above, report, don't condemn or celebrate. Dig into an ugly, dark place inside, and be honest about what you find, but don't present it as anything but what it is -- an ugly, dark place.
3.) Gore should be liberal, but meaningful. You can't win this contest just by stringing together some graphic descriptions without any feeling. This is an important act, even for an experienced murderer who's killed many times. There is no such thing as a motiveless murder. Even when the motive isn't comprehensible, seemingly, to a normal person, it *does* exist. Try to go somewhere you've never gone before, or that you've promised yourself never to go again. In any event, *feel* what you're doing.
4.) I just decided to allow two entries apiece. However, if you enter more than once, you must put your username in your AN, and the two entries must be based on different base concepts/ideas/prompts/what have you.
5.) Nothing over 4,000 words. I hate to do that but I'd probably never finish reading too many longer stories.
For those of you who like options, here's a few. These are totally optional, but I'd get a kick if people used these.
1.) Song prompts. If you know the song, use the whole song. If not, you can either use the lyric snippet I provide, the title, or look up the lyrics online and use the full lyrics. If you're feeling adventurous you could try to download the song, but some will be hard to find.

I need three little piggies to make a piggy pie
'Cause nothing's like the scream when you hear a piggy die

g.) New Model Army - Shot 18
Well they make out like they're so surprised
But it's easy when you're "civilized"
Count to ten, close your eyes

I never knew I was so anesthetized
And triggers pull so lightly
And people die so easy
I never realized!

Now I open my head and let his voodoo in
He wants to take you to Hell,
but for him, it's Heaven.

They can't make things worse for me

But someday I'm gonna change my mind

l.) Insane Clown Posse - Cherry Pie (I Need a Freak)

Hunger inside you
Hunger destroy you
She's a killer, she's a thriller
n.) Megadeth - The Scorpion

I promise I won't keep you long...
I'll keep you forever.
p.) Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss (any Black Spiral Dancer fans out there?)
Close your eyes, look deep in your soul,

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on April 9
- Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 3 people
- Final notes: First, I want to apologize for taking so long to comment on and judge this contest. Long story short, I got caught up in the immense tsunami of chaos that is trying to move and generally get one's life in order. This is a horrible thing to have to admit but I honestly forgot I still had this to judge. So please accept my apologies in that regard. It has nothing to do with the quality of the entries, that's for sure!
I'm rushing to get this judged, but I haven't commented on everyone yet. I will be doing so after the judging. Don't worry; even if you're not on the finalist list, you're getting a nice comment from me. I owe you all.
Especial congratulations to the winners. I rewarded those stories which felt most convincing, real, and... mouth-watering. >D

Ooh, already bookmarked. I think I feel a half-way decent story coming on!

-
I'm not 18...but I have a lot of things to say on this subject.
-
-
Oh? Send me a message and tell me about it. I'll probably say yes so long as there's no chance your parents will get mad at me for corrupting you.
-
-
I have not one, but two story ideas that would fit well in this contest. I shall see, and I may be back...
-
-
I am considering allowing multiples, provided they use different options/ideas/base concepts.
I hope you do -- you're one of the better gorror writers on SW.
-
-
Well - first one done... but SW screwed with the word count - it is only just over 4K - I can go through and edit to slim it down by a hundred words or so, just let me know.
-
-
Aw, hell with it. A hundred extra words won't kill me. And I've noticed their counters aren't always accurate anyway.
-
-
Excellent. Second one is only going to be slightly longer than flash fic, and I should have that done within the next couple of days.
-
-
Yay! Looking forward to it.

Intriguing contest idea. Serial killers are something I specialize in. I am sure I can come up with something appropriate.
"Did you know that you are talking to an artist?"
"And then, *off* comes the head without spilling one single drop of blood... now I call that showmanship!"
Both samples are from Exorcist III, spoken by the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif). The first full quote:
"I like plays. The good ones... Shakespeare... I like Titus Andronicus the best; it's sweet. Incidentally, did you know that you are talking to an artist? I sometimes do special things to my victims: things that are creative. Of course, it takes knowledge, pride in your work... For example, a decapitated head can continue to see for aproximately twenty seconds. So when I have one that's gawking, I always hold it up so that it can see its body. It's a little extra I throw in for no added charge. I must admit it makes me chuckle every time. Life is fun. It's a wonderfull life, in fact... for some.
The second quote in full:
It's too bad about Father Dyer. I killed him, you know. An interesting problem, but finally... it worked! First, a bit of the ole succinylcholine to permit one to work without, ah, annoying distractions, then... a three foot catheter threaded directly into the inferior vena cava -- or, superior vena cava. It's a matter of taste, I think, don't you? Then the tube moves through the vein, under the crease of the arm, into the vein that leads directly into the heart, and then, you just hold up the legs and you SQUEEZE the blood manually into the tube from the arms and the legs. There's a little shaking and pounding at the end for the dregs -- it isn't perfect, there's a little blood left I'm afraid. But, regardless, the overall effect is astonishing! And isn't that REALLY what counts in the end? Yes, of course, good show biz, Lieutenant, the effect! And then, off comes the head without spilling one single drop of blood. Now I call that showman, Lieutenant!"
-
-
Awesome! I've always wondered if they were from a movie. Now I can track it down. Is it as hilarious/awesome as it sounds?
-
-
I think it is better than the first Exorcist. Then again I prefer something not as cliched as the first one. Exorcist III is what William Peter Blatty intended to be the sequel instead of that horrible Exorcist II: The Heretic.
It is easily found on DVD. I saw it recently at Walmart for about 5 dollars. -
-
Excellent. Thank you again!
-
-
-
-
I really like the look of this, but I'm not eighteen. My parents let me do anything on the computer - well, they don't know what I do on it, but they definitely won't be snooping around.
So can I give this a go? -
-
You might as well. I've made a few exceptions on those grounds already so it'd be unfair to arbitrarily deny another one. Just be certain there won't be trouble about it, is all. I don't want to be forced to get stricter about the rule.
-
-
Yay! Thanks, I'll do it right now, I love writing this sort of thing.
-
-
-
ah, nice contest- too bad I pretty much missed it.. but there's always some other time
