Quote Yourself!

First, here's that obligatory little review of my present life situation and my motivation for hosting a contest:

Wow, I never thought I'd become such an active member of this site that I'd host a contest. I never even thought I'd get enough points, you guys never give me any trophies! The idea for this contest was born when bla bla bla bla bla, and when the truck stopped moving, and I felt her grip of my hand weaken more and more for every second that passed I thought to myself: "I'm going to host a quotation contest on Storywrite."

So here's what it's all about:

Some of you people seem to think that a QUOTE is the same as an APHORISM, a short verbal little cleverness, which is not the case. Wikipedia says: "A quotation is the repetition of one expression as part of another one, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed (as by citation) to its original source."

What I want you to do is to quote something you've written (preferably one of the stories you have uploaded on this site), something beutiful, intelligent, funny or anything that works well without its full context. For example here's a quote from my story True Deciever:

"You ever heard how they speak about white lies, Jimmy? Well, fooling the people around you into believing, for a moment, that the world is actually a good place, that’s a goddamned golden lie in my book."

It's often specific quotes that writers are remembered for, so this is quite important. Try to find a quote that makes me want to read the full story! Good luck.

Rules:

1. Please don't include more than two quotes in one entry. And you may enter only once, so pick with care.

2. Please include the original source in your AN.

3. Most importantly, the original source must be something you wrote!

Other than that you've got free hands on this one, bash and thrash and slash all you want.

UPDATE: Okay, so far I have received a lot of quotes from romance stories, and quotes concerning love in general. This means you'll have a better shot on the trophies if you find a quote about something other than that, since I naturally want a good mix of genres among the finalists.

UPDATE: Of course you can also enter quotes from poems. I don't think anyone has done that so far, but I'd love to see it! Anyone who does has a big shot at the trophies.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 28, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 250, Silver: 100, Bronze: 25, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
So, I finally made up my mind about which entries I liked most. I think everyone should read them, it won't take much of your time and it might just get you a new favourite writer.

I really appreciate every single one of your entries, and I'll definitely come back to these stories in the future. I see them as personal introductions to all you brilliant writers out there.

I liked the concept of this contest, and I recommend anyone to copy it. In these quotes every sentence was important and every word mattered, guaranteeing no uninteresting reading.

Finally, thanks again for entering, hope you all had a nice Christmas. When you guys come here to Sweden to accept your Nobel Prize in Literature, the champagne's on me.

    For you G.L.

I don't think it's really worth creating a whole entry for this...but I've excerpted it from my story BARRY...and I think it's worth passing on:

" Life and the future are precious and tenuous. Best not to lose sight of either…keep them in focus."

      For you G.A.

I love the way it seems like it doesn't really mean anything important at first, but then just sort of grows and flourishes when you think about it. The way it describes that you both have to have fun(=focus on life) and be determined and aware of the old ever-present future.

If you had entered you definitely would have made it to the finalist list. However, there's and old Swedish saying that translates roughly: "People who use ellipses don't get any gold trophies."

    WOW

I think this is, by far, the most introspective and enjoyable group of writings I have read while I have been a member of StoryWrite. Even without a context for the larger story, the quotes all seem to hold their own. What a great contest...

I don't have many stories to choose from but I'm gonna look. I love this idea for a contest.
