Success Stories

Results day.

Two words that are very, very important to me, and anyone else who recently underwent those cruel, cruel things known as exams. Tomorrow, British (at least I think only British) students will be receiving their AS and A level results, which, for anyone who's a bit lost here, are the most important exams before University.

Of course, I haven't done them yet. No, I have done GCSEs, the most important exams before your AS and A levels. GCSE results aren't out until the 21st, but I thought that I would make this contest today for anyone getting their results tomorrow.-

I've said results a lot haven't I?

Well, anyway, this contest is for anyone with a good success story. No, not success story like a successful rehab patient, or that story of the successful operation your doctor comforts you with. No, I want good defeating evil, even evil defeating good, someone getting that job, winning that race ***(brownie points for Olympic/Paralympic stories)***, passing that test, finding that special person etc. etc.

And I SWEAR, anyone who tries something like "oh, but he wanted to die more than anything, so the suicide counts as a success" will be DQ'ed, and I've never even threatened a disqualification before, so you can see just how irritated that would make me! XD

The stuff I'll allow encompasses a pretty broad spectrum, but the success HAS to be obvious. If I have to ask ANYONE where the triumph is in the story, you can bet that you're not in the running for gold, even if your story is publish-worthy.

So yeah, think success people. You all know what it means so I don't expect any grey areas with these stories, but if you're at all concerned that you may fall into a grey patch then just throw me a comment/message.

--------------------------------------------------------
Another thing: it can be a fictional story or it can be one based on an actual feat you're particularly proud of.

An example of a non-fiction story that will be giggled at:

"Two years ago I got a first in my degree in child care. I was really happy because I didn't think that I was going to do that well, and I really look forward to getting a career in child-care now."

Many congratulations, but that's not what I asked for. Keep it story-like people, you wouldn't rush out and buy that from Waterstone's would you?

If your first instinct was to do something like that, then pretend that you're not actually the one who did it. Give that success to one of your characters, see how much easier it is to make a story out of that? =3
--------------------------------------------------------

Rules, oh how we love them:

- I'll comment absolutely everything I get, I promise, but that's all I can guarantee you if your story doesn't fit the contest. I.e. no awards for you =(

- Brownie points for making me feel sorry for your character, whether they're pessimistic or a typical failure, it'll just make the happy ending that little bit more special.

- And yes, the main theme has to end happily. If you have someone dying in the background, that's passable, but I want the main bit to end with a smile!

- I won't put a numerical limit, you know that a decent short story is more than 10 words, and that no one can be expected to fairly critique after dragging themselves through a full novel.

- I've yet to see someone try this on in a contest, but NoNe oF ThIs or THIS, 'COS IT LOOKS ANGRY... GRR!

- Do your best to spell/grammar check, I can read stuff that's got mistakes coming out of its ears, but it looks un-proper =)

- Paragraphs always look nice, so use them!

- I don't know how to comment on poetry as I neither write it nor read it. I did promise to comment on every entry, so if you enter a poem expect either "I liked it" or "not my thing".

- To show you've read this, tell me whether you're right or left handed in your author's notes.

Have fun with it, guys!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 30, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 250, Silver: 150, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
I know I'm a couple of days late at judging this, but some of the entries gave me trouble when it came to ordering them. You're all to blame really - making your writing too darn good!

Okay, that sounded silly, but it's true. This has been by far my most successful contest - pun totally intended.

In all seriousness, everyone did a fantastic job, and anyone who didn't quite manage a trophy this time should not be disheartened - you'll most definitely manage in other contests.

Thanks for making this contest so fun - albeit difficult - to judge. I wish you all the best of luck in future contests =)

    xx
