Novels and Chaptered Works 2

Yes - you've read the title correctly! I am interested in reading your chaptered pieces, but with a catch; your contest entry will consist of two parts.

First entry part will be a summary of your complete story. This can be written as a query letter or some other form - but it must be written with the intention of marketing or selling your story to me.
To give you idea, it is usually an outline of what happens in your story - the who, what, where, when and why. Unlike a teaser (found on the back cover or inner flap of a commercially published book) it details your entire story, but in a concise manner. It is also known as a 'synopsis'.

Second entry part will be what you feel is your best chapter. This will be one that contains something like a pivotal turning point in your story, a climax, introduction of an important character, a conflict between an antagonist and a protagonist, or a twist.

Due to overwelming popularity of the original contest, I have opened a second one - for everyone else. I know there are a lot of writers out there that have chaptered stories that don't get the attention they should receive - so this is your chance to really shine!

RULES:

1. Stories must be of overall novel length - not a short story that you rename 'chapter 1' or prologue' just to enter this contest.

2. One entry consists of TWO parts - the summary AND the chapter. The summary must contain the name of your story. You may enter, at most, twice. That means two completely different stories, NOT two chapters, with their accompanying summary.

3. Unlike the original contest, I will accept any new story - as long as the chapter you provide is part of a longer story, not a short story. All stories that I feel DO NOT meet this requirement will be DQ'd.

If you wish to submit a joint synopsis/chapter, please IM me first.

4. Chapter word limit - 500 to 5000 words. Summary must be at least 300 words and contain the overall (beginning/middle/end) summary of your story.

5. All genres accepted.

6. Adequate standards of grammer/punctuation/spelling must be adhered to. Sticky caps and netspeak are unacceptable. Swearing to be used appropriately and kept at a minimum.

7. At contest close, there must be a summary present for every chapter entered. 'Lose' chapters will be DQ'd.

8. NO fanfiction, poetry, short stories, rants, sermons etc - original stories only.

9. If you entered in the first contest, DO NOT enter the same story here.

Any entry not following these rules will be DQ'd.

Every entry will receive an indepth critique, and the judging will be based on overall story concept AND the writing skill/style demonstrated within the chapter.

This contest will remain open for at least 3 months - as its aim is not just to award prizes, but to allow people to showcase their pride and joy. I encourage everyone that enters to read at least one other person's work and comment.

  • I want to enter but these contests always make me feel inadaquate.

  • Mine is not a finished novel but a work in progress, can I enter the "Summary of the World" and a chapter rather than a summary of the entire storyline?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I was writing the synopsys and I acidently hit the back button and lost all my work!

  • Questions:

I understand from reading WritersEffigy's comment followup that you are allowing unfinished novels to be entered in this contest, right?
Even if it is unfinished, you want a summary of the over all book.
You also want a summary of each chapter as it is submitted (above rule 7).
My last question for you is "Would you personally put your best novel on here (that you hope to get published) and run the risk of someone plagiarizing your work?"

Yes - I am accepting novels that are unfinished - as long as the summary covers most or all of the storyline.
No - I don't want a per chapter summary. I only want the best chapter posted so that I can examine your writing style etc as it fits against the summary. The summary helps me to also understand where, in the sequence of the novel, that chapter belongs.
Last question - personally, I can't answer - that is something you need to decide for yourself - but your chapter and summary are both protected by the first online rights that storywrite provides by way of copyright.

  • ok... im just making sure on this... all i have right now is the first chapter... its really good, everyone who has read it loves it, but i do have the plot for the entire story. so for my summary you want me outline the entire thing??

Yes - that is correct. Your two entries would be 1. your first chapter, and 2. the summary.

The novel can be a WIP. The point is - it must have been started and you be currently writing it. Most novels are WIP.

Awww, I have a novel in progress but I CAN'T write reviews. Just not possible for me. Plus, the plot is undergoing review and I'm considering where to take it. Shame, this looked fun . Well, good luck to everyone who entered !
