Stories of Summer - Serious About Reviews group contest

Hey people!
So summer is upon us now and you know what that means, right?
That's right! Time for our second annual summer story group contest!

Ok , so last year the theme was sand. This time we're gonna go with water, ...ocean water.
Who doesn't love going to the oceanfront in the summer?

There are no story specific options on this one. It can be pretty much anything ocean related. Sailing, surfing, fishing, diving, an ocean cruise, mermaids, an ocean floor civilization, barnacles growing on a pier piling, a mutant fish that comes out of the sea flapping around destroying mankind.
Hmm. Ok, we'll probably just ignore those last two unless they're really really good.

It's all up to you!
Well, ..no, ...not really.

It has to fit into one of these genre options. (So I lied. Sue me.)

1. Action/Adventure
2. Mystery
3. Fantasy/Science Fiction
4. Horror
5. Humour

There. That wasn't so hard was it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main thing Brooke and I will be looking for is creativity.
Well, ..that and little things like grammar, ..spelling, ..story structure, ..punctuation, ...
Hey! You didn't think you were get off scot free, did you?
On the creativity aspect we're looking for new stories.
Write something for this contest that makes us go, "Wow, that was pretty darn good!"
We know you can do it!
You know you want to!
And remember. This contest is for all of us. Even if you don't enter a story yourself you can still go read and comment on the ones that are there and lend your support to the ones you like.
So let's have some fun here people! That's what we're all here for right?
Well, ..that and getting published, ..but having fun is much easier, ..and more fun!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oh yeah, ..the RULES:

1. You must be a Serious About Reviews resident. All trespassers will be escorted to the main gate.

2. No sticky caps or chat speak.

3. Watch the language. (Brooke might blush.)

4. Keep all entries under 3000 words please.

5. Have FUN!!!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 27
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
    Thank you all for your entries in the contest!
    These are all great stories and I had a hard time ranking them. I even changed the order a couple of times before making a final decision.

    Congratulations to everyone in the top six. They are wonderful stories and I truly enjoyed reading each of them.

    Special congrats to you Blondie. You are a talented writer with a great use of language.
    And to think you weren't even going to enter anything. *scratches head* Shows what you know.

    Great job everybody!
    I hope to see you all again in the next one.
    Greg

  • Oh! The ocean! *blissful melting* I knew this was going to be a good one!

    • Yeah, it should be fun.
      I hope everyone knows how to swim. *laughs*

        I've been swimming since before I could walk. You may want to pack in a couple extra life preservers just in case, though...wouldn't want to see a contestant floundering in such a great contest!

  • Summer?

    It's winter where I am... I wish it was summer!

    Ok, I have a legitimate argument to make - which doesn't necessarily mean it will pass muster with ye fair judges. For that reason, I figure I'd better test your receptivity before spending the time finishing this story.

    Here's the rub: I want to write a sci fi story. I know that you don't have science fiction listed in your genre options, but I've planned for that. *nods sagely* See, science fiction is technically a sub-genre of fantasy, so by writing a science fiction story, I am actually writing a fantasy story. It's true - look it up. I have no need to lie when the truth serves me so well.

    So...what's the verdict? *sits to wait, hands poised over the keyboard*

    • Good point on both counts Irish.

      Technically, ..and in my own mind (scary thought there!), ..science fiction is actually fantasy. That's why I didn't mention it specifically. Yet many people think they are different.

      Perhaps I should go edit the fantasy option to fantasy/science fiction. Yes, I will do that. Thanks for pointing it out.

      In the meantime, start typing girl!

  • i wrote a story perfect for this *sighs and shakes a fist at the no prewrites.. now i shall have to see if my brain will cooperate on a new one

    • Haha! I thought I'd make people EARN their stripes on this one. I'm such a slavedriver.

      I'm going to extend the entry deadline anyway to give everyone more time to write something really good and impress me.

      • oh thank gawd! my writer's block is finally letting up and now i'm flooded with ideas and too little time to write them.

        • Yay! for beating writer's block!

          I'm currently swinging on one right now with a sledge hammer hoping it'll explode like one of Gallagher's watermelons.

    Man, I got nothing! I wish I could come up with something on the fly for this, but with all my other stories going on right now....dammit!

    • No worries dude. I'm enjoying reading the other stuff your working on. You can catch the next one.

    Ok, 'cause you keep going on about it, I posted a story. So the grammar and spelling is crappy because it's an unedited National Novel Writing Month story. So sue me, you asked for stories. *laughs*

      Hey, that's great! In the few minutes since I posted that note two people have already entered.

      Maybe I should bitch and rant more often, eh?

      Don't worry about it. Irish's is gonna be way longer and we already told her it was alright.
      The word count doesn't really apply to family. Irish is already our wacky sister so you can be our eccentric brother. lol

    You twisted my arm...

    Ok - I wasn't going to enter this you see. But... it taunted me - and you kept on extending the date, and begging and pleading, and being a pain. Anyway... the muse waited until I had so much on my plate it wasn't funny and then said, 'hey - write story' - so - here's the flipping story... I hope you're happy.

      So it worked then.

      The reason for the extensions and 'nagging' was cause on Tuesday there still just four entries. With three awards and three HMs we couldn't judge it till there were six.
      It really did work cause in two days four more people have entered. Persistence pays off.

      Thanks for finally entering.

    Thanks! I must say - that was unexpected. I had anticipated that Irish would have picked up the gold for this contest - but as you said - shows you what I know.

      In the end the top spot came down to who most closely followed the rules and guidelines, being a group contest and all.

      So congrats! You deserve it.

    Thank You!

    Thanks so very much for the bronze trophy and all the points. I appreciate them. I really wasn't expecting to place among such talented writers. I'm truly pleased.

    Thanks for hosting.

      I thought your story was well written and it had a totally different theme and feel from the others.

      Besides, I told everyone up front when I added the prewrite option that new stories were more likely to place since that was the original requirement. One of the perks of being a judge.

      So congrats!
