You've just begun a story, written several hundred words of flawless prose...and run out of things to say.
Where is this opening scene going? You sure don't know. It's been taking up space on your hard-drive for months, rarely seeing the light of day; when it must be introduced, it always comes out with an apologetic "I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but..."
Well, aplogize no more! This is the contest for all those opening scenes that have no stories attached to them!
Rules:
1. Your opening scene must be a complete SCENE but not a complete STORY: it must finish its purpose (introducing world, characters, conflict) but not solve the problem. I will do some background research to see if you've completed the story elsewhere and are trying to sneak in the first chapter of your novel.
2. Your opening scene must be 1,500 words or less.
3. If your opening scene contains more than 3 major grammar mistakes (improper punctuation of dialog, tense misuse, confusion of possessive and contraction), it will be removed from the contest.
Now get out there, dig up your unloved opening scenes and share them with the world!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on June 3, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 100, Silver: 70
- Final notes: I'm truly sorry for taking so long to judge this contest. The month of May turned out to be a lot more hectic than I expected. And then there was the matter of earning enough points to create a second place...
I also appologize for not being able to comment on all pieces. If you have any specific questions you want answered on your story, please message me with them and I will do my best to give you feedback.
Congratulations to the winners, and good luck to everyone with finding an ending! ;-)

Haha. I have about 50 of these taking up space on my laptop.

Why no prewrites? The whole point is to be able to post something previously written?
-
-
I'm not allowing prewrites because the implication is that any story posted on SW is complete, or the first part of a story that has been completed elsewhere. This contest is for the fragments that the author wouldn't normally dream of presenting to other readers.
