Contest Novels and Chaptered Works by tallblondie

********THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED FOR ALL NEW ENTRIES********

However, if this interests you, and you are kicking yourself for missing out, please go HERE to check out the second installment of this contest.

Yes - you've read the title correctly! I am interested in reading your chaptered pieces, but with a catch; your contest entry will consist of two parts.

First entry part will be a summary of your complete story. This can be written as a query letter or some other form - but it must be written with the intention of marketing or selling your story to me.
To give you idea, it is usually an outline of what happens in your story - the who, what, where, when and why. Unlike a teaser (found on the back cover or inner flap of a commercially published book) it details your entire story, but in a concise manner. It is also known as a 'synopsis'.

Second entry part will be what you feel is your best chapter. This will be one that contains something like a pivotal turning point in your story, a climax, introduction of an important character, a conflict between an antagonist and a protagonist, or a twist.

I know there are a lot of writers out there that have chaptered stories that don't get the attention they should receive - so this is your chance to really shine!

RULES:

1. Stories must be of overall novel length - not a short story that you rename 'chapter 1' or prologue' just to enter this contest.

2. One entry consists of TWO parts - the summary AND the chapter. The summary must contain the name of your story. You may enter, at most, twice. That means two completely different stories, NOT two chapters, with their accompanying summary.

3. I will only accept chapters written prior to the start date of the contest - 30th April, 2008. All new stories will be DQ'd. Summaries should be the only entries with a new publish date. If you wish to submit a joint synopsis/chapter, please IM me first.

4. Chapter word limit - 500 to 5000 words. Summary must be at least 300 words and contain the overall (beginning/middle/end) summary of your story.

5. All genres accepted.

6. Adequate standards of grammer/punctuation/spelling must be adhered to. Sticky caps and netspeak are unacceptable. Swearing to be used appropriately and kept at a minimum.

7. At contest close, there must be a summary present for every chapter entered. 'Lose' chapters will be DQ'd.

8. NO fanfiction, poetry, short stories, rants, sermons etc - original stories only.

Any entry not following these rules will be DQ'd.

Every entry will receive an indepth critique, and the judging will be based on overall story concept AND the writing skill/style demonstrated within the chapter.

****POINTS WILL BE INCREASED DEPENDING ON NUMBER AND QUALITY OF ENTRIES****

I will keep this contest open for at least a month.

Closed for judging

  • Closed for judging on August 30
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100
  • This is not an anonymous contest - the editors will be able to see your name.

  • Does the story have to be completed?

No - as long as your summary contains your overall story (written or unwritten). If unwritten, it would be your basic overall plot. I would suggest in that case that you add a spoiler warning so that any other persons do not read it for the duration of the contest.

When you say "chaptered", does that include TV episodes?

As in a script for an original TV series and not a script for an episode of an existing program?

You'll have to enter both of them as an entry. The chapter as an entry, and the synopsis as an entry.

Question, I have a story, I've been writing for a while. But I have not posted it here. It is in fact on Deviant art. And has been. Am I permitted to submit it if I provide that site as evidence that I didn't write it simply for this contest?

That is fine - IM me the link of the chapter you upload for the contest, that way I can check your publish date. Or you may enter the summary and have the Deviant art link pasted in your author notes (that way, you wouldn't have to upload a 'new version' of your chapter) and I'll read the chapter from the Deviant art site. Whichever is easiest.

I'm enterng my synopsis now but the chapter might not be for another few days - is that OK? I have done an edit on my PC but not updated it to the site yet, and I want to make sure the edit is on the site not an old version.
And I don't know which is my best chapter yet!

My chapter's over the word limit but it's one of the shorter chapters in my novel.
I've looked at the overall story severl times to see if I can break it down any more but there aren't many logical places to break.

    • Ok - I'll allow it - but I reserve the right to judge on the first 5000 words.

  • awww... i have a novel...but its incomplete...

    • That is fine - most people's novels are WIP. I only want your best chapter (so far), and your summary (even though you may not have written the ending). This contest is not about how complete your novel is, but how well you market it to me. Please feel free to enter this contest.

  • I've got an entire novel sitting here, but I don't have it on SW. Can I still join, or will the new date on my chapter get me DQ'd?

    • Just enter a joint synopsis/chapter. I have allowed a couple of people in your situation to do the same. Just enter it in the contest as "Title: Synopsis & Chapter #" - that way I know not to expect a seperate chapter entry.

  • ?

I have a chaptered story which is about 13,800 words. Is that long enough for this contest? I consider it a novella, and I plan at some time to expand it into a full novel.

    Andy

  • Very original idea. Its like you would do if you really were trying to sell your story to a publisher. i might have a look in on this.

  • I wish I had joined StoryWrite before this week!

I love the idea of this contest! I have read some of your work and comments on other people's work and I really wish I could've entered this contest... but the headline at the top says I'm too late. I have two novels (WIP) of about 30,000+ words that I would love to have your opinion on.

Hello Blondie, sorry if i am being familliar.
Like a few others i also missed the date for a story crituqe. Will you be reopening the list?
After ten years of editing and re-editing i finally finished my one and only effort.
I'm not a great writer and my punctuation stinks to be honest, there are approx 65000 words.
It is called The streets of plenty, and is complete.
