Breaking Your Mold: a true writer's challenge

alright, this is a contest for people who want to get better, for people who honestly care about being a good writer. the premise is thus:

Step (1): post an entry containing:
(a.)your favorite author
(b.) your favorite band
(c.) your preferred genre and style of writing (I.E: "vampire fantasy. first person.")
(d.) the name or link to one particular story you feel sums you up as a writer. your favorite piece. (your story, one that YOU wrote.)

Step (2): i will send you a message with a prompt or story suggestion.

Step (3): write, to the best of your abilities, what you are assigned. submit it with the prompt i sent you in the author's notes.

That's pretty simple, right?

well, here's the challenge:
i am going to prompt you with something you're NOT familiar with. if you write love stories, get ready for a mystery. if you write fantasy, you might get a courtroom piece, or a romantic story. and so on.

THE RULES:

No erotica. romance is fine, but try and keep it PG-13 at worst.

Keep language tolerable. i can deal with a curse here and there, i understand such things can be neccessary, but keep it sensible, (no "assault on precinct-13" language folks.)

try to write what i give you. i will try very hard to bear in mind your particular strengths, and will come up with a genre or prompt that i feel suits your style.

if you absolutely cannot bring yourself to write what i give you, let me know, and we can negotiate.

Most important:

enjoy this! trying new things will vastly improve you as a writer. don't just kinda try to write something different, Immerse Yourself In It! if you have mystery, play with it. think like a cop, narrate like a private eye. if you have romance, put yourself there, imagine what it would feel like to be so in love! if it's action, visualize the sequences. immerse yourself in something new! and believe me, when you come out at the end, you'll be shocked by what YOU wrote.

i will be pretty easy on the judging. i'm not going to really tear into anyone, because this might be hard for some.

Grammar: try and keep it readable. no abreviations ("L8R" "R U Cmng?"). i'm not going to focus too much on capitals, but punctuation needs to be passing good.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on May 8
  • Rewards: Gold: 175, Silver: 50, Bronze: 25, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
alright people. first off, i want to thank you all for entering my contest. i had a blast thinking of prompts and reading what ya'll (hey, i'm texan, i can say that) wrote. i am planning a sequel, so please, keep your eyes open and enter again. so now to the rankings.

"Jazz Blackside and the Case of the Cliche Charlie" i think we can all agree here that Irishyndia did an outstanding job. i don't think very many people could have pulled a off a story so riddled with cliche while still keeping it original and, of course, readable. so the Gold Trophy goes to this along with... (*insert drum roll for fictional prize here*) an all expenses paid trip to the Amazon rain forest with a research group. take bug spray!

"Crazed Stunt" took a close second. what can i say? i'm a sucker for a good satire. but seriously, this story was very well written by any standards. i'd never thought about the um... everyday applications of magic, like coordinating clothes. that was clever and very original. so the Silver Trophy goes to this story along with...(*insert drum roll etc.) a brand new CAR!!

Third place and the bronze trophy (which seems weird that bronze comes third, i mean, bronze changed the entire world, making weapons and metalcraft possible. gold and silver are just nice to look at. weird...)goes to "Truth and Consequence". this was a tough choice. in all honesty, it was a tie between this and "Keep Flying" however, i flipped a coin and it came down for this. congratulations! you win third, which means a very expensive watch! (pick one, i don't care, it IS pretend after all.)

honorable mentions are "Keep Flying" and another tie decided by coin toss. this one was between "Perfection" and "Protect Me." however, in the end, the HM goes to "Perfection." kudos for doing something not many people can do, (seeing from another's point of view) and doing it well. protect me was also good, especially after the author's notes.

so those are the top rankings. but rest assured, everyone who entered did a great job. not many people are willing to step outside of their comfort zone and try something different, especially when people can see (or, in this case, read). so congratulations to all of you. you're already well on your way to becoming a better writer. so remember, never stop writing, never stop observing, and never, ever, stop challenging yourself.

This is a great idea for a contest, and I would love to do it! My one concern is that I don't have a lot of time to write at the moment, and I'm not sure I would have time to finish. If I ask for a prompt and don't finish by the end, would that mess things up too terribly for you? If so, I'll wander my way somewhere else... Have fun hosting, though - this should be very interesting!

bah! i would love for you to enter, even if you don't finish it.

absolutely you should enter! i was thinking about extending the deadline if there's a way to do that, so give it your best shot. just lemme know your favorite author, band/song, and your favorite story. this should be interesting, because you're such a varied writer...

If you keep pushing back the contest date, I might eventually finish the whole Jazz Blackside piece. It is still going to be a while, though, unfortunately... *sigh*

BAGH! i've been found out. you're right, i'm pretty much random most of the time. buyt i did try to pick the subjects to challenge their authors, so it wasn't totally random. at least the general subjects. the detailed stuff (he should be australian, red hair, a mute, in venice) that stuff was pretty much out of the blue.

    I wish to join

(a.)your favorite author: Wow.. um.. *reads too much* Anne Rice
(b.) your favorite band: heh, WAY too many; skillet, disturbed, breaking ben, 3 days grace, rascal flats, I listen to all genres and like almost all of em!
(c.) your preferred genre and style of writing: I write in 1,2, and 3, but usually 1 or 3 person. Usually tragedies or hate pieces...
(d.) the name or link to one particular story you feel sums you up as a writer: A Hate So Strong
    Link: http://storywrite.com/story/156770

Well thats all... sorry if I made it harder on you, I'm a very... open minded person who reads tons of things, listens to a lot of music, and write in many genres... But if you can challenge me I'd love the opportunity!

      sorry!

i am so sorry i didn't respond sooner! i didn't even notice this comment because my computer's spazzy most of the time. however, i've extended the contest and might some more so if you want it or not, here's a prompt:

okay, so the story is thus: your main character will just be some average guy who just got fired from his nice, cushy desk job. but when he's on his way out of the building, it goes through a hostile takeover. terrorists or robbers is what i mean. so he's trapped in the building, and has to call on something in his past, (military experience, mob hitman, something like that) to save his ex-coworkers. be creative, and have fun!

Bah... ran out of time to write. I was really looking forward to this, but I can't see me being able to write the story in one day... I'll prolly write the story sometime though. Thanks for the prompt, and sorry can't make it in time.

  • Would ya mind extending the deadline a bit ... ?
Cause I got loads of work at teh office, and well, I might not be able to finish in time, like Irish.
