Dark Fairy Stories!

This is my eighth contest, and I know people, I hear you cry 'But you haven't even finished your other two yet!'

I know, I know, but I just had such an inspiring idea for a contest that I would burst if I didn't start it now!

Okay, so what is this all-inspiring idea?

I want you to write me a dark fairy tale.....but wait! Before you all rush down to the 'new story' and start typing away.....it has to have a moral. Like in Little Red Riding Hood-'don't talk to strangers-or like Thumbelina-'don't judge people by how you see them'.

So I want a well written dark fairy tale, no more than 4000 words, and at least 400 words, that has an actual meaning to it.

I'm not putting many rules for this, so here we go...

1. Usual spelling and grammer check please-make it easy for me to read.

2. Don't copy off an idea that already exists. For example, don't tell Little Red Riding Hood from the angle of the wolf-been there, done that.

3. Use as much descriptive imagery as possible. I hate reading 'They sat down.', when I could have read 'They sat down gracefully at the mahogany table.'

4. Write it properly. I've read pieces that were written by eighteen year olds who don't use full stops, capitals, etc. I'm sure we all learned this stuff long ago.....

Okay, enough with the boring stuff.

But, just before you run off, here are some pointers that will definately win some BIG points with me.....

1. Use humour. I love to laugh :))

2. Use horror-I also love this :D

3. Use of animals, fairys, ghosts, werewolves, vampires, or nymphs is........highly suggested!

Okay, now go away and write.....and have fun! :D

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on April 3, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 100, Silver: 80, Bronze: 30, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
    Well its over!

And I can't say I'm overly happy about it, I was hoping for a lot more entries....but on the plus side, it means everyone wins! So I suppose its not too bad, though it makes judging easier for me

The way I chose the gold was based on how effectively they wrote the fairy tale, how clear the message was, if it fitted what I had asked for, and if it was a completely new idea.

Silver did re-write from a few existing fairy tales, but it was so brilliant I couldn't not give them a trophy, but it was also the reason they did not win gold.

For bronze, I wish there were joint trophies, because I really liked this one but could see that silver did deserve to win something high, and I fell in love with gold as it included werewolves....but anyhoo, if they had joint trophies on here, bronze would definately get a silver

For my two honourable entries: It was really hard deciding who would get a green trophy and not higher, as again, I really wanted those joint trophies! I decided that although, I loved all the entries, the top three won over the other two because they were longer and more detailed, and were 'dark' fairy tales, in the case of 'Sarah Finds a Different Place', although both of these were still brilliant entries, and I loved all of them.

This was an interesting contest, and it brought a few very varied entries, all of which I enjoyed reading, thank you very much for entering!

Ok I love the idea but here's a question. What constitutes a FAIRYtale? Does there need to be magic? Or can it be just an ironic story in the time period - like Hansel and Gretel without the witch or Cinderella without the Fairy Godmother? Just a quck clarification I would really love to enter!

It can be whatever you consider to be a fairytale, and I odn't mind what time-period it is set in

Just bear in mind that I don't want a copy of any story-so no new versions of Cinderella, etc.

Ok that was a trick. I clicked on this in the featured stories section thinking...this was a story!
    I feel cheated!
I guess I'll have to read an entry or two.
I'd enter but...morals and me don't really mix.
atleast not in the written world.
