Hello folks, and welome to my contest.
I am, as anyone who has read my stories, apart from being a romantic fool, also a scifi nerd.
I love the stars, space, space battles, whatever involving spacecraft and tech that's literally out of this world.
Now I actually haven't read much scifi here, so I thought I'd see what Storywrite's best have to offer.
Rules - Hate 'em, but we need 'em -
- No screwy grammar, no typos (okay a few accidents are acceptable, bu that's all)
- nO TyPinG lIKE tHUS
- Good stories, please
- And feel free to let your imagination run rampant. I love a good yarn just as much as the next guy.
So enough of my balabbber.
Get on with it!
Cheers,
Randy.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on March 10, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 100
- Final notes: This contest did not let me down. I saw plenty of good stories that have the potential to explode onto the scene, just need a bit more work. To the winners, I liked your stories because they gave me what I look for in every story I read, a bot of humor, a bit of suspense, a good storyline, and most of all, originality.
Congrats to all concerned, and KEEP WRITING!
Randy

Science fiction's a pretty broad genre. I'm guessing, though, that you want something more along the lines of, say, a Battlestar Galactica or Starship Troopers story? Then there's the Star Wars-y angle...
--dreamshell-- -
i would stick all three of those under the "space opera" heading.
most of the classical scifi writers (hg wells, ac clark) spent their time pondering "what if" questions where nothing much ever happened.

-
There's a difference between sci-fi and science fantasy. Starship Troopers is sci-fi, that is technologically plausible. Star Wars, on the other hand, has no basis in reality whatsoever, and is therefore science fantasy. The genre is not as broad as you might think.
And what about first-chapters? -
-
I disagree there. It's plenty broad. Although, I suppose people who profess it not to be have swayed most. And while Star Wars is certainly science fantasy, I'm figuring that's probably the type of thing the contest author wants (since things like space battles and such are generally written more as sci-fan than sci-fi). Also, I would argue sci-fan is a subgenre of sci-fi, so it qualifies.

I reckon space operas are based on technologocially plasuible stuff, but Star Wars is just the product of some guy's imagination.
No offense, Lucas.
But for all those who are wondering about what to write, just give me something with space action, believable characters, and good technology.
First Chapters are okay, but be sure to continue, as I can't stand being cut off in the middle os good yarn.
Cheers, and good luck. -
-
Meh, it can go either way. Space operas often use elements of sci-fan as opposed to the more 'plausible' possibilities. Check out these two sites for further examples;
