It's The Thought That Counts

As it's (more or less) the Christmas season, I thought I'd base the concept of this contest on one of December's most popular sayings: "It's the thought that counts." You know, the one your mother used to remind you of when your aunt bought you clothes that might have fit six years ago.

So, it's pretty simple. Write me a story based around and that contains the line "It's the thought that counts." It can be sarcastic, it can be earnest, sexual - if you really want, you can even flip it on its head and say "it's not the thought that counts, but rather the action." Just make sure it's your theme and you include it in a sentence. (Be aware, though, that there are definitely brownie points for creativity.)

The finer details:

1. PROOFREAD. Take some pride in your work, because if your story is so riddled with spelling and grammatical errors as to be distracting, I will not comment on it. (If nothing else, hit the "spell check" option before you submit.)

2. No prewritten work, because it's unlikely you already had something written to these specifications and I don't just want the concept randomly inserted.

3. Erotica is okay (gay, straight, whatever) as is profanity, violence, etc., but I will not accept rape.

4. Nothing above 3,000 words, please.

5. This one's not really a rule, but a suggestion: try to comment on at least two other entries.

At the very least, I'll comment on everyone's stories, but I'll also try to give constructive criticism if I have time.

That's it. Have fun. (;

    Oh man

    Ever read the classic short story "the gift of the magi"? I absolutely HATED that story, but it's a prime example of what you wanted to read. A definite "it's the thought that counts" story for people who like irony.

    ...I'm still not sure why people liked it so much to consider it a classic.

      I didn't like the Gift of the Magi, but I didn't hate it either. I just thought it was obvious and a little predictable. I like irony that's a bit more subtle - more of a surprise than something I expected.

    I LIKE HOW YOU DECIDED TO USE THAT SAYING. It is true though.. HEHE reminds me of when I told my sister i hated what she got me. She was so ... at me for a week. An it is the thought.
