Hello and welcome to the next exciting episode of StoryWrite Presents.
Don't touch that remote control. We have control of your monitor. You have been abducted by strange alien beings who demand that you write stories if you ever want ice cream again.
-insert strange music here-
As you who have been following our contest series know, you have the potential to reap great rewards for great writes. The gold and silver winners will be awarded a 3 month Gold or Silver StoryWrite membership.
This time, we want your best Science Fiction/Science Fluff writes. You can write them fresh or you can enter a prewrite. We do not give preferential treatment to either because we not only look for originality, but polish.
Some of you may be asking, "What the heck is Science Fluff?"
Technically, it is still Science Fiction. It just leaves a person able to write without necessarily having to prove that every facet of their story is doable or even possible in the wildest of imaginations.
Now, do not confuse Sci-fi/fluff with horror or even fantasy. While it can be both horrifying and fantasy based, they are not the same genre. For instance, Dracula is both horror and fantasy, but it is not sci-fi. Frankenstein, on the other hand could be considered sci-fi. Freddy Kruger, not sci-fi. Jurassic Park, sci-fi. Harry Potter, not sci-fi.
Whether or not your write qualifies in the Sci-fi/Fluff genre will be entirely at the discretion of each individual judge who will in turn give me a vote on their top 4 favorites. We will not dq you for having a different idea of the genre, but we will judge each story based on our own preferences an attitudes toward the genre. That is why we will have a varied and diverse bunch of judges who don't necessarily all think exactly alike.
So, get out your space ships, laboratories, futuristic calamity laden lands and time machines and get to writing.--or editing your prewrite.
THE RULES--set in stone
1. Only 1 entry per author.
2. No photos or graphics. No blinky backgrounds. Stick with light backgrounds like white, beige, or pastel colors and dark font so that most people can read them without going blind. The default background and font is fine.
Please do NOT use black on red or red on black, it hurts my eyes
3. STORIES ONLY.
4. Minimum word count 500 according to the site word counter. NO MAXIMUM WORD LIMIT.
5. Abide by all site policies. Here is a link to them for easy reference.
http://storywrite.com/home/guide/rules
6. NO FAN FICTION--that was another contest.
7. Your entry must NOT have been entered into previous SW Presents contests.
8. Complete stories only. Even if it is a chapter in a series you are working on, it should read like a complete story without the benefit of the rest of the book.
The Suggestions--Written in Sand, But Still Important
1. Use spell check.
2. Use paragraph breaks.
3. Limit phonetic spelling to dialog or to express dialect and only use acronyms and sticky caps if they actually have something to do with your story.
4. Proof read your work.
5. If you enter a prewrite make sure it is your best work, edited and it is indeed sci-fi/sci-fluff of some sort. Edit your author's notes, background, etc to be in compliance with the rules if need be.
6. Check back often for suggestions from the judges in case you missed a rule.
7. Read your fellow contestants, they will probably return the favor.
8. The word count of all entries will be determined by the word counter here on the site. Be sure you check to see how many words the site shows your write to be regardless of what your word processor told you. The site counter and various word processing counters do not always jive so use the site counter to avoid DQ situations.
In most cases, this means that your word processor will show a higher word count than the site counter does by about 100-150 words. In order to ensure that your write meets the 500 minimum get a count of 650 in your word processor, then double check it after posting to make sure you got the word count right.
To keep the contest fair and consistent, we will be judging word count by the site counter only.
9. READ ALL THE RULES.

LoL, oops. Backwards fingers. I will fix it.
-
-
Ah! I can't wait to get started! Yes, I still haven't started my entry, but Harry Potter's been blocking my schedule. I love the SW Presents contests; they always make me feel creative and come up with some pretty good stories! I believe it's always good to get away from your genre and explore the possibilities. Good luck in the contest, everyone!
-
-
Whoot! I agree with that one. The one on short stories had my mind running in circles for a while, thank God I learned though.
And good luck to you as well.
-
-
OMG! such long stories.....i'll die just reading them!!!

LoL, no dying allowed
Isn't that in the rules
-

-
I confess, I don't know how to write a short story that's actually short.
-
-
LoL, I always wonderred why they called them short stories anyway. In school when we studied "short stories" they were never short.
Yay for no word limits, no?
-
-
COOL
This sounds awesome I think my story is sci-fi but i'm not sure let me know if it isn't I will remove it. It sounds like horror at first but i go into the svience aspect a few chapters in. -
Sounds like an awesome contest.
-
Hurrah!
I love these contests! You judges always give such excellent feedback!
Are you ever planning on doing a horror or fantasy themed contest? -

Many thanks to all!
I woke up this morning and found (much to my surprise) that I had won this contest.
I was shocked, to say the least, as I had not expected anything more than an honorable mention, and I suppose this is the nod to get this one published, which I will do.
Again, many thanks, and this award was much appreciated.
