Writing Exercises - Descriptions

Bonjour, mes amies!

This Writing Exercise contest is Description themed. Too many stories contain absolutely fantastic characters and plots, but the descriptions leave something to be desired.

Thus, I am going to give you a list of places. You are going to pick one of these places and describe it, as vividly, as clearly, as realistically as possible. You are going to take this place and make it come alive, via words.

Now, you have a choice as to how you can proceed in the contest:

1. If you want to, you can merely describe a place and leave it at that. A simple, detailed description.

or....

2. Write a story placed in one of the settings (listed below), making the setting as detailed and believable as you can. ...Make sure that you make every aspect of the place as vivid and life-like as possible, of course, but also have characters, a plot, a story arch, etc. Everything that makes a decent story.

Either one you choose is fine. Whatever floats your boat.

.....

List of Settings:

A. Hell
B. Heaven
C. Fairyland
D. Dreamland
E. The Future
F. A Torture Chamber
G. A Harem
H. A Witch's Gathering
I. A Biodome
J. The Center of a Hurricane
K. Beneath the Earth
L. The World as Someone Mentally Insane Would See It
M. The World as Someone Sickeningly In Love Would See It
N. Chaos
O. Order
P. The Afterlife
Q. A Haunted House
R. A Battlefield After the Battle
S. Inside of an Ant Hill
T. Another Planet in Another Galaxy
U. The Sun
V. Ragnarok (also known as the Apocalypse)
W. A Marsh/Bog/Bayou
X. The Sewers
Y. Virtual Reality
Z. Inside the Vibration of a Sound Wave

....

Interpret these settings any way you like. For example, say you want to write about Heaven. By no means are you limited to a Christian Heaven, or an Islamic Heaven, or a Buddhist Nirvana, or anything like that. Describe Paradise as only your imagination can conceive of.

As with all my Writing Exercise contests, the main and absolute goal is to be as CREATIVE as possible. Thus, if your story requires your character to leave one of the aforementioned settings, then go ahead. Do whatever you want to do with the story. So as long as you're writing something, then it's all good.

Heh, and with that out of the way, the RULES!

1. Please check spelling and grammar before you submit.
2. No Word Limit
3. No Taboos. If your character is going to swear, have sex, or kill people, then make sure they swear creativity, have excellent sex, and leave a bloody corpse (though hopefully not the corpse of the person they were having sex with, because that's just rude! *grins*). My rule of thumb is: if you're gonna break a societal taboo in your writing, then do so fantastically.
3a. This is not to say that you can't write a G-rated, blissfully happy and puritan story. I love those, too. Write whatever you want!
4. No prewrites. The whole goal of this contest is to write something new. That's why I'm offering higher points as a reward.

....

There you have it! Good luck in the contest!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 6, 2007
  • Rewards: Gold: 250, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
Thanks to everyone who participated in my contest! I was really impressed with the quality of the entries, but especially with the amount of imagination that the majority of the stories possessed.

Normally I just say this to not hurt feelings, but this time I really wished I'd created more trophies because there were so many quality entries.

Great job people! Even if you didn't get a trophy, I still really enjoyed reading your entries.

    Thanks! :-D

    Well,

You know that I am guilty of my protagonist having sex with and then killing the victim. In fact, it may be one of my trademarks. Sometimes it is bloody, messy, and gory. I suppose you'd be more impressed if you saw something different from me. Ah shucks! I will have to think on this.

      heh

Write whatever you want. That section of the rules was just a joke, and while I don't prefer stories that end in sex/death, you're certainly not prohibited from writing/submitting one. Hell, it's a description contest after all. If bloody, messy, gory stuff fuels your creative side, go ahead!

Oh, and collaborative stories are cool. I have no idea how they'd affect the winnings if you won a trophy, but sure. ...Actually, I don't think I've ever had a collaborative story submitted to one of my contests before....

Oh!! What I could do with a torture chamber!

I just saw that, but I would probably call it a dungeon. However, the victim(s) would probably be forced to have sex before they were tortured to death. You have put a damper on things. I'll have another look. Trying to do something different will not be easy.

Can I enter a collaborative story?

    Andy
