If it is a second or third chapter in a story, combine them all so i understaqnd what is going on (even if i have read just the first chapter)

Ok, I have this habit of chapter stories, and I recently revisited an old one, and posted it on here, but my question is, how long is too long. The one I want to enter here is over 17,000 words long, so is that too long, or is that what you're looking for?
