Regular Short Stories [anything goes]

Hello everyone! This contest is very simple and I hope that many of you will enter. I have a specific set of requirements for my contest that must be followed or there will be a guaranteed DQ. I will be adding more trophies and points as the number of entries goes up. Also, should I receive more entries than expected, I will increase the number of entry allowance.

For this contest I want a COMPLETE short story. The longer the better.

I comment on all entries.

**Note: I have recently dropped the MINIMUM word count from 3,500 words to 2,500 words!

Allowances:

You may...
1. Write whatever you desire (all genres are welcome)
2. Include gay/lesbian and s&m if you wish
3. Enter up to two entries

You will be graded on the following elements. For each element I will be rating your story on a scale of 1-5; with one being the least and five the highest. After reading and commenting on each entry I will add up the points. Should there be a tie then I retain the right to choose which story ranks for gold, silver, and bronze (also for honorable mention, should I add more trophies at a later time).

Grading Scale:

1. Plot line (must contain a beginning, middle, and end)
2. Grammar and Spelling errors
3. Organization
4. Dialogue
5. Characterization
6. Level of Emotion/Reaction
7. Originality
8. Theme/themes
9. Other elements (such as the use of symbols)

Rules:

1. Your story/stories MUST be a minimum of 2,500 words. I will accept NO less than that.

2. The MAXIMUM is 6,000 words. (if persuaded then I might be moved on this one)

3. No poems, no text chat, no script form entries

4. Absolutely NO fan-fiction

5. No chapters

6. Your entry must not have been entered in any of my previous contests. I will know if it has because I remember most if not all the entries I read, and I also comment ALL contest entries.

7. If you have the time then please make an attempt to read and comment at least one entry; not your own.

8. Have fun!

If you have any questions then please feel free to message me and I will reply as soon as possible.

This contest began on July 1st and will END on July 31st. I will be giving everyone one month to write or submit an entry. If you need more time then please message me and I will push the end date back.

By COMPLETE short story, you mean a beginning, and middle, and a definite, solid conclusion?

    • Yes, that is what I mean. I would allow the beginnings and middle of novellas, but I will be hosting a contest for those entries later. Thank you for asking.

  • Short stories at a minimum of 3,500 words? You have to be joking.

    • I most certainly am not joking. I am considering dropping the minimum word count down to 3,000 all depending on the number of entries I receive by tomorrow afternoon.

      • My view of a short story was 500-1500 words. Good luck with the contest.

        • Yes, I like short stories at that length as well. This contest however was made for those writers who have lengthier short stories that are almost, but not quite novellas. I will be hosting other short story contests for 500-1500 words later this month if your interested.

Internationally a SHORT STORY simply refers to a story beneath 7500 words. It MUST have a beginning, middle and end to qualify as a story. Most of the Awards (Hugo, Quill, Nebula) have short stories Awards and the limit is beneath 7500 words.

    • I most certainly am not joking. I am considering dropping the minimum word count down to 3,000 all depending on the number of entries I receive by tomorrow afternoon.

  • If it's THAT long, it wouldn't be a short story, would it???

    • Yes, it is still considered a short story when compared to a novella and novel since it does not quite meet the word count required to be a novella. But I will be dropping the word count very soon to allow a greater variety of stories into the contest.

    Sorry

I have entered with a new story but did not check the word count and it is too short. Please dq as my attempt to remove it failed. sorry for the inconvenience. T.

  • I hoped to enter but my short stories are all TOO short . Hope you get some great entries though good luck!

    • I'm sorry to hear that. I will have to hold another short-short story contest soon since it is in demand. LOL Thanks though, I will need luck to finish and comment on all of these entries.

  • Crap I just entered a pretty good story but it has chapters... Damn damn damn... Do with it what you wish, if it is to be DQed then so be it... An awesome contest though by the way...

    • Normally I would allow you to enter the contest ..regardless of the rules, but since I've already sent to many others away for not meeting the minimum word count ..I wouldn't feel right if I did that. I will be hosting a Anything goes contest later this afternoon if you would like to enter your story in that one then I would be glad to have it! I will have a grading scale for that contest for those who want one.

    Ending time

The system said this was still open until Aug. 29th, but you said in your notes July 31. Here is hoping that my entry "cognition" was not too late :-) Sorry if it is.

    • Haha Nope, you are okay. I've been pushing the date back for the end of the contest so that I can allow more people to enter.

truthfully I think that your a good writer and really good at judging contests. But I don't like to enter your contests because you focus more on grammar and stuff like that rather than actually details and stories. i don't know how you can do that. If its not something I'm interested in it becomes so mind numbing.

Actually everything that I focus on makes up each story. You can't have a story without a plot, dialogue, etc. As for the grammar part, I only add that into my critiques becuase there are a lot of writers who enter my contests that do like their grammatical mistakes to be pointed out since it is the same as editing really. I don't focus mainly on grammar and that stuff.

I do read each story and I comment on the story as a whole and then break it down into sections. I mainly offer a 'critique' for writers who like to receive a more detailed comment. I aim to help other writers improve rather than just tell them that they did a wonderful job. I mean I do host contests where all I do is read and comment but every now and then I like to challenge both the writer and myself with critiquing contests. lol

Sorry, I pressed enter too soon. lol Thank you for the compliment as well. I do hope that you change your mind about my contests; if not now then maybe in the future. But, I will make an effort to host more contests that do not involve critiques if you like.
