After reading a lot of 'rants' on the site, I've come to the conclusion that apparently everyone is supposed to like one book, and one book only. Kind of funky considering that this is a site based on literature, with thousands of diverse members.
Not sure what that book is, but apparently it's not Twilight.... or Harry Potter... or one of the thousands of other books that people read. Not really sure why, though. Could be because after reading it, people had the urge to kill themselves? Or run amok with a gun? Or maybe it was someone standing behind the reader with the gun, threatening to kill them if they didn't read the obviously crap book? Yeah, that's it! Whooo! Case solved!
Might seem obvious, but... if you don't like a book while reading it, then... stop reading. Just like if you don't like a song, you'll turn it off or ignore it... tv show, change the channel. Unless a book needs to be read for a book report, then there's nothing making you finish it. And if you 'have' to finish it because you bought it, then maybe look upon the crappiness as a lesson that cost you the price of the book. Me, if I buy a book (although I mostly use the library to borrow), and I don't like it, then it gets closed until some other time, or I find someone to give it to.
Different tastes in literature is important. Who wants to be reading what someone else says they should read? That smacks of arrogance, and you (collective) deciding what's best for someone else's literary palate. Okay... you read a book and didn't like it. Darlin', if that's the worst thing that happens to you this week/month/year, then I say consider yourself lucky.
I read a lot. My tastes go from political intrigue to gothic to science fiction to mythology. Some of the books are good, others bad, while there are those that I skim through to get to the good parts. I've found little gems here and there that earn a permanent spot on my bookcase, while others get put down after read (or even during). I've read so called 'classics' that were so boring and mundane that I couldn't continue.
I never liked vampire/goth type stories. In fact, you could say that I'd rather shove my finger in my eye and swirl it around than read. But, I picked up a book in that genre one day, and to my surprise, liked it. I grabbed every book by the same author, and devoured them. Some were good, others I worked to remove from my memory... while another I couldn't even finish.
I had people suggest books/authors that write in that genre, and some I like, others I don't. But I would never tell someone not to read those that I didn't like, or tell them that the author/books suck. It's their choice to read... just as it's my choice not to.
And when it all boils down, isn't the choice to peacefully read what you want one of the main reasons we all love books?
So go ahead, complain about that story! Curse the author, and the characters! But please, don't assume that just because you didn't like it, that others should accept your bitching about what may be 'their' favorite book... for I am sure that you have some gems in your collection that others think are quite pathetic and worthy of being placed at the bottom of a bird cage.

to columns. This was just great. As are your responses
)
(actually, I read the back, and tried the first few chapters, but... couldn't make it. Not my cop o' tea in the fiction department.) And I read a bit of the Twilight series about a week ago... gawd, was it terrible. Um, I mean. It wasn't for me, but kudos to anyone that liked it, and I hope you treasure the book.
Any book you like is well worth the price.
Like I mentioned... to each his/her own.)

a bit though

at the way it was twisted and at times held nothing in common with the book past the title.
I love reading people's reviews of books, but when it falls into a scathing slam against it, it seems that maybe they missed the whole point the book was aiming for. Either that, or they hated it from page one, and worked that hate throughout the whole thing. Then again, the book could have just sucked big time... I can't comment on tomes I haven't read yet.
. If people did it in a column, with acknowledgement, then somehow got it in to a contest, then it might work.
