From The Jungle to the Page Section 1

This column is about showing Animals and WIldlife in your Story; I have read some stories recently which had animals but very little detail.
This will help you to detail your animals along with everything else and make it seem like one whole story.

 SECTION 1

Part 1: Introduction

Hello there! As you are well aware (at least some of you) I own horses. As a very lucky person I am able to view and study horses up close and personal. In my drawings I am able to bring out their personality- you will learn to do so through writing.

Having animals and wildlife is not always needed, but consider this- if your character is walking through the jungle and there are NO sounds, then where the heck is your character? A fake jungle with fake leaves and stuffed toys? No, you have to make sure to visualize ALL around you.

It is possible to brush against detailing your wildlife and such, simply by stating that they are there. But if you really want to immerse your character into the depth of your scenery then providing details is necessary.

Part 2: Visualizing your Animals

Alright, below I will list an example. From there I want you to think about how it could be improved. You may comment with your answer or just simply keep it to yourself. Neither is required.

EX. 1

Shelby listened to the hazed night, her hair brushed up against her face as she walked forward. The grass beneath her feet tickled and caused her to laugh. There on the hill before her stood two horses, each one unique.

END EX 1

Okay, so what do you think could have been improved? Think about it... What about listing what color the horses were? What breed?
Below is a list of ALL the horse colors.

BLACK FAMILY:

Black

Brown

Bay

Bay Roan

Blue Roan

Buckskin

Dun

Grullo

Perlino

GRAY: Remember that Gray can Fall on either side of the family- Red or Black.

RED FAMILY:

Chestnut

Cremello

Palomino

Red Dun

Red Roan

Sorrel

The thing about ALL Horse Colors is that some only stick to one breed. Take the Norwegian  Fijord  for Instance- they only come in a Buckskin color. The breed cannot come in any other color.

If any other breed of horse other than Thoroughbreds or Quarter horses are painted then that makes them a PINTO.

Only Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds are referred to as PAINTS. If a horse is CROSS bred EX. Quarter Horse Mother, bred to, Arabian Father- then the baby has a 50% chance of being able to be Double Registered.

The Speeds of the Horse: Walk, Trot, Canter and Gallop.

Walk is slow, Trot is a FOUR beat step, Canter is a Three Beat step and Gallop requires ALL four feet to be off the ground at once. In otherwords your going really fast.

Part 3: The Thing about writing

The thing about writing is, no matter what you write for you will always have to do research. Whether it's for baseball, soccer, horses, African wildlife or the Congo. You will always have to do research.

So when you decide to have your character in a strange place, or fully created world then you have the ability to create your own characters.

African Animals usually reside in Africa, but some can reside in Australia- or some of the hotter continents. However, the animals NATIVE to Africa will NOT be in other continents unless moved there. Do some research on this.

When you read this if you have questions comment and they will be included in the next Section or answered on the spot.
