I became a new member of Storywrite with the username Whichcraft since September 2007 and I wanted to be an active member so I could get the most out of the website. Part of making Storywrite fun for you and others is by hosting contests and becoming a member of a group.
Since my humble beginning, I have hosted 12 contests and at the time of this column, have made 259 comments. I have also entered many contests to which I have received several different types of trophies. I have received good critiques from other writers and became the Member of the Month in November 2007. For three months, I’m proud of all my accomplishments. I urge other members to benefit by becoming active members and participating in all that Storywrite has to offer.
I am a member of nine groups and I have to say that some of the owners of my groups have not even been back on Storywrite for months nor have they read entries or maybe posted a contest. Part of being a group “leader” or “owner” takes communication and letting your members know you are still out there and appreciate their presence in being a part of what you have created.
One of the other things I did when I started in September 2007, was start a group called Romantica, in which I now have 20 members. Every time the system notifies me that someone has joined my group, I have sent a personal message welcoming them and hoping that they utilize all they can at Storywrite and post a story that can be commented on or join a contest that is running. We have a small reading list, but I have taken the opportunity to comment on them all.
I can’t profess to know what is right or good for your group, but what I do know is that members like to feel welcome at any stage. The active groups I am a part of make me feel like part of a bigger picture when I get a note from the owner or other members on upcoming events or possibilities.
It is a great idea to showcase different groups of the week and I applaud Barbara for doing so. This gives us the opportunity to make our groups into what Storywrite would like to see a good group become. It isn’t just adding members and building up your group but making your members feel welcome, adding items that may be of help or just by reading and commenting on the work of other writers.
Become a member in a group or start your own. See what direction it takes and make the most of it.
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in storywrite is to join a group and start commenting.
