Poetry...How do you write one?

Got an itch to write poetry but don't know exactly how to write one...Come on in and I'll tell you the biggest secret on writing poetry.
People think that like novels and short stories, poetry has rules. Well guess what silly? It doesn't have any rules. There are different types of poetry that do have rules but I find that those aren't really fun.

With poetry it's like a short story only even shortier. It can be about anything. From your feelings at the time to your pet to your friends to even your stories.

The one thing you do need is some rthyme. Yes rthyme. It has to flow smoothly. The readers have to fell what you feel. The readers have to get lost in your world for as long as your poem is. In order to do that you have to have rthyme.

For example, I have a poem featured on my site. It's about taking a tour in the house. You have to get your readers involved in the poem somehow in order for them to get interested in reading the whole thing. In my poem, the reader was the guest and I was the host who showed and talked to them on what horrible stuff that happened at "my" house. Its a good poem and everyone enjoyed the ride. It flowed good making it easier to read and loss yourself in.

Not all poems have to have your readers involved if you don't want to. My other poem is about a broken heart boy who falls in love with all these beautiful girls but they don't love him. He decides that if he can't have them, he'll drown them in a lake. But when you read the poem you don't know that he's doing that until the end. It's really good if you can add some sort of twist to it. It takes the reader off guard and it makes your poem less predictable. We like that.

So remember, poems need rthyme, and add a twist in it or get your reader involved. If you need an example check them out. I'm not saying that their the best examples but I think their good examples.

I could applaud this if it was a story. But the column is still great anyhow! I need help on my rhyme... but don't some poems not rhyme at all? I have a friend that does those.

    Anywho, thankies for posting this!!!
