How to write 'realistic' fantasy

first- we're talking about fantasy here, yes, magic and all that, not just fiction, fantasy.

if you've read 'the magical land of lalala' (something i posted) you know what i'm talking about. Fantasy should not be all 'ooh, a unicorn!' and 'since we're both fairies and sparkly and stuff, will you marry me, by the magical enchanted river?'

if you agree, that please read this thing.

These are a few rules to 'realistic' fantasy writing.

if you've read 'the magical land of lalala' (my story) it might help, because i will refer to it on a regular basis.

CHARACTER QUALITIES:
these are some simple guidelines to help you develop 'real' fantasy characters.

real personalities:

no stereotypes, no constant happiness and joy. have there be snotty characters and annoying cat girls. XD (yeah, referring to 'the magical land')

creative 'powers':

i know, i've used some powers in 'the magical land' that are a bit common *cough* *mac* *cough*, but bear with me. here are some (in my story, sorry if you havent read it) that aren't so common that may help a bit.

Jessi (matter adapter)

Kat and Kay (shape-shifters with limitations, like kat can only be a feline and kay can only be a wild animal)

Claire (mage)

Monkey (shaman)

magical creatures and convenience:

if you're characters are magical animals that mingle with humans, here you go.

try to keep them not too weird. if they fit into the story smoothly, that's terrific, but for example, in the story 'dragon rider' by Cornelia Funke, she agreed with me that it's rather strange for Firedrake to find a community where everybody worships dragons and someone just 'happens' to have something that can help him fly without moonlight. The scientist barnabas greenbloom who knows everything about brownies (sorrel and burr-burr-chan), homunculuses (twigleg), and dragons also makes the story very unrealistic. yes, dont be so skeptical, i do know cornelia funke. her son is... umm.. cute .

SETTING:
one of the most important parts of the story involve setting. In 'the magical land', the setting is in a forest with grass surrounding. it's not in a magical enchanted realm (not completely.....) and its not near a fountain of youth or an enchanted river.

things to avoid:


ENCHANTED:
caves
living trees
ponies (hahaha)

eevil villains who are soo evil that they are destroyed by their evilness and become deadened. hahahaha ok, that has nothing to do w/ setting...
