More Than Meets the Eye

More than meets the eye: Inspired by Transformers, The movie.
More Than Meets The Eye
Through race, color, religion, tradition, there is always more than meets the eye to every person. The integration of different cultures makes this world a more unified place. This integration is constantly forming through many different occurrences every day, such as the interaction between government officials and world-wide relief effort groups. However, the more intimate of those is the personal relationship, whether it be an interracial friendship or the union of marriage between members of a different race. It is with each one of these relationships that the world could become one of a closer people.
Transformers highlighted a relationship that progressed throughout the movie, that of Mikaela and Sam Witwicky. Sam was the average guy and Mikaela was the gorgeous beauty of the school. Sam was always nervous around her and did not know the right things to say. "Can I ride you home?" That was the classic line that highlights Sam's wit, quite possibly the wit that won over the girl at the opposite side of the social scale. They lived in completely opposite worlds yet ended up being together.
The major relationship in Transformers goes beyond social status. It is the relationship shared between Optimus Prime and Sam Witwicky. We have Optimus Prime, the protagonist Autobot, and Sam, the human caught in an alien war occupying his planet. Through the movie, we witness the loyalty of Sam to helping the autobots. In the film Prime says, "Sam? You risked your life to protect the Cube? I owe you my life. We are in your debt." The loyalty was returned when Optimus Prime disagreed with Megatron, the Decepticon leader, when he claimed that every human deserves to die.
The theme of seeing more than what meets the eye is something that hit close to my moral standards. Going through High School, I was the girl who enjoyed hanging out with people of a different race than myself. I did not seclude myself from my own culture, however. I feel that if you limit yourself to what others say, you will not be able to grow as a person. Being open minded and seeing beyond what is shown to the public is what makes someone different than those who refuse to expand their views for the better. I truly am grateful for being strong-willed and independent. If I had caved into people's opinions of me, I would not be the person I am today; I would not have been able to grow to be a more open-minded individual.
Understanding the concept that there is more than meets the eye, I was able to fall in love with someone who is of a different race and religion than I am. The major theme of seeing more than meets the eye in Transformers, depicted by non-traditional relationships and friendships, could be highly related to my life. I am a very traditional person when it comes to marriage. The man I marry has to be of the same faith as I, but my soon-to-be fiance was not at first. He is White, and he was Christian; however, he was Christian only by name. He listened to me speak of Islam with such passion, and when he first heard the Ithaan, he cried at its beauty and felt at peace. My white boyfriend, a new convert to Islam, makes the most incredible companion and makes me genuinely happy. When it comes to my family and I, religion is the number one thing to look for in a companion. I was able to see the true person beneath the color of his skin. Unfortunately, to people who do not know us or our story are quick to judge our relationship. They are unaware that there is more than meets the eye to Karl and I.
The eye could, at times, be a minds number one enemy; an image could deceive, a vision could blind, a perception could hinder the truth. There will always be more than meets the eye to almost every aspect of life. What is seen should not always be believed; what is seen should not be the only thing taken into consideration; what is seen should not be judged. Only what is understood should be the basis to any judgement. Exploring what lies beneath what meets the eye is the first step to bridging gaps in every aspect of human life.
