But.... Is It Promoting?

But.... Is It Promoting?

Promoting- "to encourage the sales, acceptance, etc., of (a product), esp. through advertising or other publicity."

That's one of the dictionary definitions of the word. On StoryWrite, promoting would be the use of the chatterbox, (or IMs, or critiques), to ask others to read your works.

Promoting is not allowed in the chatterbox, forums, critiques, or unsolicited IMs.

A few examples of what would fall under promoting-

-"I posted a new story. You should read it."

-"I posted a new story."

-"No one reads my stuff, and I wish they would." (yeah, it's a very big hint with you asking people to read you.)

-"I just finished my story!" (borderline... and would depend on what you say next. You're not telling people that you posted it... you're just telling them that you finished. Although too many of those comments, and it will turn into a promoting thing.)

-Asking someone what their best story is... yes, that's asking them to promote. ("What's your best story?...mine is 'title'") Don't ask for titles, and don't give them. Take it to IMs.

-Discussing someone else's story, with them, in the CB...telling them what you liked, and didn't like. That's a critique, and doesn't belong in the chatterbox.

-Telling people "Don't read my story." Reverse psychology...tsk, tsk.... and not allowed.

-Asking others to read someone's story. "You should read (whatever) by this guy... he's good."

-Leaving critiques that ask others to read your stories. ("I like this, it's great, come read mine.")

-Asking people to check out/enter your contest.

Your friends don't need to know that you've finished a story. Once it's posted, it will show up in their list.

If you want other people to know about your story, then you can
feature it, reward it, or use the shameless area. They all cost points, but...isn't a small investment better than a warning that would be added to your file?

What isn't promoting....

-Discussing a certain story in the chatterbox is NOT promoting it, if your discussion is not about how people should read it. Some chatters follow certain stories, and discuss them. Only, at times, it usually gets into someone mentioning the story title, or someone asking what it is, and instead of IMing, it gets mentioned in the CB.

One good way around this is to create a group to discuss things.

-Asking someone to trade reads/comments is NOT promoting. Once the agreement is made, then it should go to IMs to trade titles. The title of the stories (or even 'my newest one') should never appear in the CB.

"Anyone have any new stories?" "I do!" ..... "Anyone want to trade reads/comments?"... after that, IM the title to each. Don't mention it in the CB.

"I just read your story." Okay... you're on a writing site and you've just read someone's story. As long as no titles are exchanged in the CB, or no one says "The new one/old one/novel/any other distinguishing features" then it's not promoting... as long as someone doesn't abuse the right to say it.  Constantly mentioning it will be looked upon as promoting.

When in doubt about promoting, take it to IMs. :)

  • A certain user repeatedly asks me to read a story she recently posted. She always sends me IMs saying 'Hi, I just finish -title- and I was wondering if you could please read and comment?' She was a good writer, and loved by many other users, so I politely stated that promoting is not allowed. Yet she keeps doing it. Should I report it?

You should, since she's actually breaking site policy. On a site such as this, there have to be places where members can be and know they won't be solicited for reads... IMs, CB, forums, etc. When people breach those, it can make other feel uncomfortable, and that's something that no one wants.

  • ok i was wondering if this would be promoting... see i just finished a story and am continuing it with a friend but he's doing his continuation on his page and well if I tell people at the end... Hey the story continues on (insert his screenname and mention the name of the story.)I'm just not sure if thats allowed. Thanks for the help.

  • What about groups? I've seen people promote groups in the CB and I'm not sure if that's against the rules or not.

Can you promote on your own page?

  • Interesting...I always wondered why promoting was sucha big deal. And the CB would get boring.

  • I'm wondering why promoting is such a big deal that it's not allowed? Not that I've ever done it, I'm just wondering why?

Basically, the site has points as its money. When people promote, they get free publicity, while others comments on stories to gain points, then use the feature area, shameless or rewards to spread the points around. If free promoting was everywhere, then the points would be useless, and then the contests would fold, as would a part of revenue for the site (you can buy points, too).

If promoting was allowed, then your IMs would be full of "read me", and the comments on your stories would have "Read me", while the CB would have nothing but people asaking others to read their story.

Could you tell about a story if it's just written and you have no intentins what-so-ever of posting it at any time in your life?

Promoting would refer to any story that you have posted, on any site. If you don't have it posted, then you're not promoting it by talking about it.

That is borderline You haven't mentioned that you posted it, or are asking people to read. It would probably depend on what you said next.

A lot of people mention in the CB that they are writing, or posting, or editing, etc... as long as they don't give identifying features, then it's fairly innocent.

    Promoting

What is the point of writing if you can not ask someone if they would read it?

There's nothing 'wrong' with asking people to read... it would be how you ask or do it. If that's the sum of the conversation/contact with someone, then it's going to go against site policy. A lot of people solicit through IMs for others to read, and it's actually rather annoying and bothersome to those that receive the IM... and a large percentage won't read, and will make it a point to not read that person. Same way for posts left in the CB, or on forums.

The best way to get people to read your(collective) work is to read theirs and comment on it. Leaving a well thought out comment (not a 'this is good' type thing) will more than likely get someone ove to read you. There are also groups that deal specifically with critiquing each other's stories.

would "I just finished my story! HURRAH! Now to write the next part while waiting for someone to read it" would be bad? I never did it, but I know someone who probably would

That would most likely fall under hinting strongly for someone to read.
