Welcome to the Writer’s Toolkit – Plain English!
Writing is one of the best ways for people to express themselves creatively – to take what they visualize and shape it as words on a page. The process of writing is similar to creating something as beautiful as the art of illuminated lettering.
Back in the times before pens, a person often had to make their own quills – using tools to shape the nib, and constantly refining the point. They then needed to carefully select and mix their inks, as well as choose the parchment on which to scribe their art.
This same process is applicable to the art of writing today.
Though we have pens and word processors today, we still require tools to help us refine our writing. The proper use of grammar and punctuation is like keeping our quill sharp – so that our writing can be crisp and the message clear.
Just like the ink in a quill, the words we choose to use are just as important. A piece of writing can sometimes be blotched with poorly chosen phrases, misused words, and common spelling mistakes.
Lastly, our writing, just like the example of illuminated lettering, needs to be coloured effectively. This is something more than just how a quill is crafted, but how it is wielded by the craftsperson. Likewise, with creative writing, style and diction play a vital role in transforming our writing from bland to brilliant.
The Writer’s Toolkit – Plain English will provide you with everything you need to create your masterpiece – whether it is a short story or novel.
