What Type of Font do You Use?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I know a bunch of people who use a different font for each story. I usually only write with Verdana, but I sometimes switch it up every once in a while depending what the story is about. So, what type of font do you use?

Here? Typically Times New Roman. When submitting to editor or agents, I like to use Verdana 12.

Why the changeup? If I could explain my own actions, then perhaps I would recognize them as strange and stop doing them.
  • Hehehe. Like, if I'm writing a story about a fairy, for example, then I usually write it in a fairy tale script on Word. I think that it makes me want to write a story more if I have a particular font. I'm strange like that.
  • what the hell?
i just use whichever font is the default setting on whichever type of word proccessor i'm using at the moment, for Microsoft Word, i think it's New Times Roman
  • Oh, okay. ^_^

I write in something that's easy to read. I used to have a phase where I wrote in Arial but otherwise I wrote in the default Times New Roman. Now I write in Word 2007's default of Calibri which is like Arial but better and easier on the eye.

In my opinion, it seems silly to keep changing your font.

I did read some author's webpage though which said that she changed her font to Courier New (why that font I don't know) before sending a manuscript off. Maybe some agents or editors or publishers have a preference?
    • Courier New is the font that makes all the characters line up like in notepad. Some publishers (or one that I've seen) actually request Courier New along with a bunch of other silly requirements.
  • I never knew that, thanks!

if a publishing house requires a specific font, then it's either an editor requesting the font that he himself finds the easiest to read, or the one that he thinks is the easiest for a huge group of people to read (watch out for that) or the font that's the easiest for some sort of scanning proccessor to read, it's really just people being to lazy to read other fonts
  • Most Editors ask for Courier New or Arial, and some prefer Times New Roman.
Me? I write with either Garamond or Verdana. Me prefers Verdana, though.
  • I agree. Verdana is legible typeface that I find suitable for writing. Why make it harder on yourself as you write? I do, however, (sorry Kevin) find trebuchet ms (used in these forums and for non-medal users) to be horsey and whimsical looking, which isn't always the best face for serious writing. But, who ever said this site was serious?

At least it's not Comic Sans MS.

(Or Times New Roman... which gives me a headache reading... yeah, it was fun in school for that )

I did a brochure/pamphlet once for the local museum (well, my college class was asked to, but since I had the most computer knowledge and background in tourism, it fell to me)... and the person who wanted the brochure requested it be type in MS Serif. Not a pretty font, or even one that I'd want to look at through a whole 'local attractions' pamphlet. She said that it was a font that a lot of older people were used to, and that it should be used.

It irked me to no end to have to use it, and after it was done, she took one look, and said she didn't like the font.

So, the point to this is that a lot of places request a certain font, but if it's not one that would look good for the story, always have a backup already made, and ready to present

On Storywrite, I use Veranda or Arial... either 10 or 11 font (size three, I think it's called on here). When I do any 'to be continued', or 'the end', then it's in Trebuchet MS.

The only font I use on any form of writing would be Times New Roman. I've used it so much that any other font pretty much seems alien(except for when it comes to wording manga scans). The only other font I'd use is Arial(I'm so boring).

        I dig Verdana too.

  • JJ- Awesome!! -High 5's-

    Rxx- Yes, another Verdana digger!!

Pyro- Yeah, some days I kinda feel the same was, I have way too many fonts and I'm extremely picky about how the font looks.

i don't really care exactly what the font looks like, as long as it's readable, i thing the "default settings" for fonts are supposed to be the most readable

    Courier new

I use courier new as it is the best set up for book writing and use no 12.

don't even remember what courier new looks like
  • Hmmm... I've never used Courier. I am using a lot of Verdana, but the title has to be number 15 and the words are number 13. I am so picky, lol.
  • I'm unbelievably picky about my font choice, even if it's just on Word. :/

I usually use Verdana 7pt on Word, though I've been using Arial and Franklin Gothic Book a lot.

    ...I like little fonts.

i used to get tons of e-mail i couldn't read because my freinds wanted to use cutesy fonts
    • I hate "cutesy" fonts.

I like small fonts, but only if they're readable.
Verdana, Georgia, Arial, Franklin Gothic Book, etc.
      • What is considered "cutesy"?
      • Your pic is mos def cutesy though.

i don't have a problem with cutesy fonts, when it's a company logo in an advertizement, or something like that, it's just that a cutesy font should not be used for long stretches of text, my other big thing is readability, if i can't read your font, i will bitch at you for it

I like Book Antiqua for articles, gives them that 'erudite' feel

  • I use the default font for TextEdit which is Helvetica 12, but because my eyesight is not so great, I use 14pts.

Sometimes I use Dakota Handwriting {14} and Georgia {14} as well.

I always use Sylfaen 10. Just personal preference, no real reason. There are a couple of others that I like though, like Monotype Corsiva, but I usually use that only for poetry.
  • Interesting, I have never heard of these fonts before. I'll have to go and check them out sometime.

    This thought

has never, ever occurred to me. I just go with whatever the default is. I suppose the only question to ask is: is it readable? Other than that, the font is immaterial to my efforts as a writer.
