If I put something up here (or on Writing.com), will I still be able to publish it and have it made into a real book?

Placing your work here does not mean you can't publish it; however, I do highly recommend reming your story from here before soliciting a sale, as there is a small possibility it could have a negative effect.
Publishers want to publish material that are fresh and new. They often check the internet when they receive a submission, to be sertain they are not accepting a plagiarized work. As such, they might see your story here - or elsewhere - and could question if the story is really yours, or if it has already been overread by the public domain.
If you remove your story from here, it's deleted immediately; however, it still might come up in a Google search for a few days. As such, remove your story several days before soliciting a sale and you'll be fine.
I already published a short story I had posted here, so I do know it's not an issue.
Good luck, and may you sell many stories.

It often takes 1-3 months for a page to disappear completely from google so that it does not even appear on the cached list when searched. (At least this is what I've found from my own experience)
On Storywrite, on your user account information, you can check the box "Only let registered users view stories" which (as far as I know) keeps the story from appearing on a google search. Many writing sites (I don't know about writing.com) and critical forums don't allow the writing placed on it to be searchable by search engines for those exact reasons. -
First publication rights-
Publication houses often deal in terms of "first publication rights". It is our experience that temporary online publication does not constitute "first publication", but we make no guarantee that any publisher you may deal with in the future will agree. By participating in this site, you release us of any responsibility for your first publication rights.

Barbara, you seem to speak with some authority on the issue of publication; are you involved in this business in some way? If this is something that is otherwise common knowledge on this site, please forgive the ignorance, as I am seldom au fait with who does what, where and when. Obviously, the question isn't merely a social one, I am seriously wondering about my chances to publish. If you are in the business, you probably field this sort of enquiry all the time, but i could do with filling in this area of ignorance.

I copied that from the site's guides

I know that a few authors from here will list Storywrite on a letter to a publisher, but put it down as an 'online editing and critiquing' post.... like they a story only for editing purposes and to get a certain feedback to base those edits on. Not sure how that works for them, though... or even if a publisher will accept that.
