http://www.autocrit.com/critnow.cfm
This site has a tool to automatically critique your work. It's not the same as an editor, but it does point out a lot of mistakes an editor will look for.
They have a free membership, as well as three levels of paid membership.
Hope this helps someone!

I tried it. I don't trust it too much

But it does show my sentence length variation is good

DON'T trust those sites...
Seriously, a real person is smarter than a computer any day. When computers become smarter than us... Well, prepare for the apocalypse. -

Apocalypse? Don't worry. I've got my metal noodle strainer helmet and tin foil jacket ready

I found it useful, if tempered with wisdom. I use it to find overused words and discover when I am using the words was, then, and it too much ... which I seem to do without realizing it.

And hey Kody, good to see ya back for Easter!
-
You kinda learn to watch for overused words when you start to look at your stuff through an editing eye.
Thanks Yoshi. : ) -
but ... but ... but ... I want to look at myself through a consumer's eye. I want to go out on the shelf, pick it up, buy it, take it home.
ah ... the precious ...
and I agree, I'm much more critical of my own eye than I used to be. Of course, I learned a lot from people saying 'Yoshi, you're saying was too much', Yoshi, you're beginning too many sentences with the same word', 'Yoshi, you're not varying the length of your sentences', and 'Yoshi, take the blue pill' ... not sure where that last one came from. -
i had fun playing with it for a while, but its more of a proof reading tool than a critquing one.
it might tell you you used a certain word too much, but it wont point out plot holes or unrealistic behaviour or missing descriptions, etc
