Definately edit separately. Usually it's only one part of one chapter that need to be edited....would be a pain to have them all together....especially if the site experiences a hiccup at the time
-
-
my impression was that most people edited a longer story in something like MS Word, then would prefer to copy+paste the whole thing in? I guess they could just copy+paste the individual chapter...
Depends if you're doing all your editing on the site as well, or what -
-
The only editing I do online is when I notice the wrong word that got by me (using 'from' instead of 'form'...things like that).
What I got from the options was that it was for editing only, not posting chapters(which is what most of the other comments seem to be referring to). I may have read it wrong.

hmmm
perhaps a single page where all chapters would be listed in order (perhaps with a few lines beneath each describing each chapter, or lines from the chapter). Each chapter would link to its own page. Perhaps this "complete book" page would have place for comments, and a description of the story.
The upswing is, you can then enter the complete "book" into contests, or individual chapters, depending on taste. You'll also get comments on the complete work instead of per chapter.
my 2c...

The book would be listed on your author page then as the book, AND as the individual chapters.
The other option, and what I am leaning towards currently, is to:
* ONLY show the main book on the author page
* have a seperate chapter object for each chapter
This means:
* comments on each chapter, but can be browsed per story
* Main story is a "table of contents" if the user adds chapters
* Might even be able to edit all chapters at once, with a "Chapter blah" splitting between them or something.
* Most stories are short enough to not need chapters - all current stories would be left alone
Would you prefer the ability to add chapters to contests and features seperately? Or does storing them one-item-per-long-story make more sense? -
-
hmmm
Maybe showing the book only on the author page is a great idea. Going into the book page lists the chapters.
When adding an entry to a contest, maybe show the dropdown like:
- My Book
-- Chapter1
-- Chapter2
etc
Then a user could either add the entire book, or just a chapter
Adding a chapter to a book page shouldn't show it on the Author's Page.
If a user wants it to show, they could still go the old fashioned way?
I would really love just the book showing with the individual chapters listed in it.

When it's described like that, it has a certain appeal I like. It does annoy me when people only look at chapter four of something and see it's chapter four and don't bother to go back to chapter one and start it over.

I do agree. Linking them together is a wonderful idea. I do it manually each time, because there's just no other option, but if they can be linked together without having to paste the link, it would be very nice.

Nya, Nice Idea
Yes, I like that idea. Having a page where it describes the story, then lists the chapters in chronological order with a small description of the chapter and what has happened so far in the story would make posting chapter stories much easier for both the author and the reader. -
Well...ummm...
I like the idea of editing seperately but i'm not sure about the list idea.
Someone mentioned a dropdown list, like a lot of story sites (fanfiction.net, tthfanfic, etc.) have and personally I quite like that idea. -
i like the idea of a drop down list, too; there has to be some way to link all chapters to the same page though.
i used a list, but i'm not sure if i'll be able to edit once my one week of gold runs out... -
I like the idea, but I see a small problem.
If I have a story with, say, 10 chapters, then add another, how would anyone know?
A simple solution would be to post the number of chapters next to a book nme. This would also give readers an idea of how developed the book is so far.
As for editing, the chapters should be editied seperately. When you hit 90,000 words, it's just too much of a project to search for the spot where you killed Jacob in chapter eight, then decided he should have tea and muffins with Mrs. Gray in chapter 12.

Hope this helps
Not all writers know how many chapter they are planning to write, but agree there should be links.
On my other site I write on, you can post short stories or books, where you add chapters as you write them.So when its a book you know there are plans of more chapters, at the base of the chapter there is a link to the next one, if the writer has written it. You should check out Fanstory.com, to read there work you have to join, and its free, you only have to pay to be a member to post work there. -
Other
On fictionpress.com they have a system where you enter the name of your story, and then that becomes its own link. From there you add chapters separately which can be seen after clicking on the story title. When you click on the story name, the first chapter pops up and then there is a pull-down menu that allows you to go to any chapter you want to.
That would be a huge improvement for SW. Way better than going through the authors "view all stories" list just to find the chapter you left off on. -
I agree with some of the more recent comments, suggesting a book with separate chapters. I'm actually so entralled with the idea I might try to do it myself lol.
