I was just thinking, with all the points we get the only thing we can really do with them is hold a contest - and not everybody likes doing that.

so I was just thinking why cant we buy membership with points?
I mean - nothing stupid like 100 poitns = 1 month of membership, but perhaps like 1000-2000 points = 1 months membership.

Just a suggestion because not everyone has the money yo buy membership

(I mean I know the site needs money but I know I'm not the only person who has dead-weight points lying around...)

Interesting idea. I'd imagine it would carry a hefty point tag. Like 1000 points/week or more. Maybe 500/day? Because the money the site gets from memberships is probably quite dear.

You know there are other things you can do with points besides hosting a contest, right?
This is a good idea though, I don't know why I thought this was already in play.

Well you can hold point and appluase people... -_-
Even if you can I still think it would be a good idea as people do have dead point lol xD

Also donate them to group contests your group puts on. Or share them among your friends. Or give bonuses to people whose stories you liked, whether in a contest or not.

But technically you cant do anything for yourself - they are all pretty much given away to other peope (unless you feature your story which you might not want to do)

              Lol lots of mights xD

The problem with points to go toward membership privileges, is then it would be a lot like another writing site that I know of for starters (not saying anything bad here, I just have some opinions that I care not to share lol)... for seconds, it would take an equivalent of a lot of points to probably get a month's worth of just a silver membership. I'm talking 10,000-12,000 points perhaps. And for thirds, it may make people lose interest in spending points on the other features of the site (which is the original intention of the site- contests, rewards, features, gifts, etc.) in order to save up points for the extra membership features.

I honestly don't know how the idea would work.

However, I do think an interesting neat idea that could be incorporated with your points idea, might could be that once a month, a member could spend say 500-1000 points to be a silver or a gold member for a day (the 500 for silver, the 1000 for gold) in order to make spice-up changes to their profile?? Maybe that would be a neat idea? And the site could only allow the feature to be used once a month (other than winning top commentor award of course) so that it's not abused? Just a thought anyway

That's a great idea! You could primp up your home page and any contests and any stories you wanted, every month!

    Actually

That idea does make sense, and might encourage people to be fairly active on the site. Even a thousand points is a LOT for casual users, so only the ones that go on the site daily and comment on tons of entries would ever have enough points to get a membership like that. At the same time, I can defiantly see the flaws. That might mean less money for the site, and that means less updates, and less time kevin can devote to the site for improvements.

Well as I did mention at the start, not a rediculos amount that meant EVEROYNE could just get it (eg like 100 points for a week.) But I did say something reasonable like 1000+ points.
  • When I first joined I thought you could do this at "Store" but actually it was to BUT points, not to buy a membership

I'm gradually closing down on a writing site which has a 'purchase membership with points' system.

It's a nightmare, lots of 'charities' begging for your points, running treasure hunts, etc. They're supposed to help out members who can't afford to pay for their little place on the site.

The Spam, scams and destruction of the writing atmosphere got me down, which is why I'm here.

If you have too many points, why don't you 'feature' the occasional brilliant story you come across - even better, do it anonymously. Make someone's day and you'll probably make your own day more sunny.

If there's a purchase membership with points system - I'm outta here, been there, done it before. No thanks.

    Lis.

      I know that,
But what is the point in getting points if all you can do is feature your story or GIVE your hard-eardned points away?

And TBH that top commenter award thing is a bit silly in some cases becuase some people jusr write a long load of usually and not something that will actually help - I know this because my friend done it once

Anyway, It was just a suggestion - If mods dont want to do it they dont want to do it. If they do - they do
  • well anyhow if I want a membership then I'm going to get it with some hard work I'll have to start typing really fast!

And im not saying you do do this but some people jsut write a load of random That wont help anyone - jsut like

"Yeah great read - loved it. Great Chaercters please continue writing, really good storyline."

      Repeat about 20-30 times and...

      Ta Da! Ranked comment 1.

      • Well I try my best to bring out the specialty of the story. Doing it with random ones is hard... so I like to comment on my friend's ones. But sometimes I have to do it because maybe after 44 long long comments (thats how many comments i did before i got my membership) you kind of run out what to say. So unless I really want it I'm not going to work hard to get it.

Well, it's a nice idea for those of us who can't pay for membership yet - soon as I get the resources, I will do, don't worry!
But whilst I'm here, I'll point out that the current method of "winning" membership by writing the most comments in a day isn't exactly flawless. I've won a couple of such memberships by commenting on contest entries, or just having plenty of time to be active (which is constructive) but I've read a couple of comments that said something along the lines of "Oh, this is nice. I just wanted to make sure I beat so'n'so to the free membership so I'll say more later".
