Message Notification.

I was responding to a message from a member who had recently joined. He apologized for not getting back to me, explaining that he had expected email notifications when he received messages.

On the other sites in which I'm active, all have notification options. They are also all smaller in membership.

With Yahoo groups, there are several options. I've chosen the daily digest there or when twenty-five messages have been sent.

At another site, it offers instant or differing time periods. I've opted for instant at that one, it includes responses to my posts, including stories, and PMs.

The other sites are instant on all messages.

I'm a very active member at Storywrite and I check messages here several times daily. I never really gave it much thought. Do we have any email notification system in place of which I'm unaware?

For the other sites mentioned, these options are offered upon joining and are changeable. I would suspect some active and even inactive members would choose not to receive notifications.

For new members, if such option(s) were offered when they joined, I believe we'd see a significant increase in their participation and return. The options could be added to the 'Layout and filter options' on the edit page of the authors' profiles with a default setting of no email notification. This would create no interference to existing members and allow new members as well as current members the option(s) of message notification.

It would create some complaints, but I'm sure the increased membership participation at Storywrite would justify it.

On your My Account page, listed under the Personal Information area, there is a •Edit email and notification settings option that you can adjust to your preference.

      Hi Barbara!

Are the email notification settings available to the new members when joining?

The default settings are very good for me, but since I'm on daily, I've never got one.

Do new members not receive email notifications by default until after a week?

You know what would be nice? The option for persistent notification. Every so often, I'm clicking around, editing or browsing the forums, and I don't see the "new message/note" at the top. After a page or two, it's gone, and I never know I got it until much later.

If there were a box on that page to select persistent notification, so that the "new message/note" note stays up top until clicked on, I'd be over the moon.

        That's a great idea!

That would solve the problem of following forum topics.

Or how about a "You have X new messages" at the top? Or even just a number next to the messages link, like "Messages (1)" or something?

If nothing else I agree with GuitarShank, we definitely need a "You have X new messages" notice at the top that is cleared when you go to the messages page. Though we keep the ones at the top too, or have a little popup telling us we got a message or something.

The last would be a little nice for when reading long stories and your friend sends you a message since you won't refresh the page for a while.

Apart from this, i also suggest to be able to see message without refreshing our page. I usually talk to my friends while reading a story. It bothers me alot to refresh again and again. I don't prefer to chat because i have to continue reading my story. Sometimes it happens that someone send me a message while i continue reading stories etc and i see after 10-20 mins. And then i have to apologize. So, cant we get any instant notification on top of the page or something like that?
