I went for "other" because I don't know if they have or not. I have my stories password-protected here on SW (meaning if someone steals and publishes anything of mine, they have to be a member of the site, which narrows the list from the world at large pretty considerably). I haven't googled my opening sentences or titles or anything either. Since I just started entering the publishing world, I'm not that fussed about it at this point.
Also, SW is where I play. I get editing suggestions here and I read others' works and see how they construct their stories on a word/sentence level.
True, I've begun keeping my for-publishing stories off the internet entirely. But that's because some places won't accept stories that have been anywhere on the internet, even password-protected sites. It's not for fear of someone stealing my work. Not everything I write is so awesome that someone would want it.

A 'professional' editor (I use the term loosely) on another site offered to edit my children's story to a publishable standard.
Instead, she 're-organised' my story and published it herself. It was 'altered' enough so I couldn't touch her.
It's one of the reasons I'm here and not there.
I'm the same as Val, I tend to 'password' protect. I also keep some in my word processor which will never go on the wonderful web. I do chuck a few items into one or more of my 'blogs' to see how they bounce. It does boost the old AdSense a little
My partner also had many of his poems copied on another site - and when the copier was confronted, she said it was for 'educational' purposes only. She was a teacher and thought she had the right to anything she found.
Just be careful and be aware.

Actually no, I don't have any personal experiences...but if you think about it, there may be people stealing a bit or two from works without any awareness. I wouldn't want to experience it but I think you're fine to publish work here with PW protection, unless you have the most fantastic idea in the world, then it's up to you what you want to do with it!

I did have someone steal my work and copywrite it under her name but, not on this site. She was a friend and she did that but, I have the original notes and if carbon dated the paper and ink to prove that I wrote it.
Other than that I don't know why anyone would want to steal my stories or poems--thy're gems to me to be sure but, I doubt anyone would agree that they are worth stealing.
What's password-protection and how would I be able to get it? Just curious. -

go to edit author info from your profile and check the box "only let registered users view stories". and then submit. In other words, once you check that box and set up your account in that manner, someone visiting the site cannot access your stories/poems. They would have to be a registered member of SW.
Everyone, no matter what type of membership you have, can use this feature.

I haven't had any experiences with someone stealing/copy-righting something of mine from this site before that I'm aware of.
The moment you put down your property (story/poem/essay), and this includes internet posting, your copyright begins. SW dates your posts to the minute of when you post them.
Some tips that I have learned from a friend:
If you have a printer, print copies of work from your story's page here on SW. It will show the dates, times, etc. It's good to keep for records anyway.
Save work to your computer in documents.
Back-up work on USBs or disks.

No for me.
I have to agree with Marta though (not about her own work but the stories on here in general) as there isn't really much worth 'stealing'. Think of how many stories you have to read before you find a really good one, and even then is it publishable? I doubt many here will have to worry about it. -
No, I doubt it.
I agree with Jack's comments entirely.
My work is password protected - just in case

Well, I found few of my works on some communities and forums of social networking sites. They are not taking any benefit but they just copy-paste the stuff (without my name) for discussion, fun, increase their posts, points on those sites, etc, on this infinite net and actually after some time one can't say that "I wrote this thing."

K, thanks.
I kinda got mixed reviews but i think I might just put a chapter here and a chapter there. It's just that I would hate to have to type a whole new story. I do want to get this published someday and I'm lucky enough to live by and editor/writer. I want everyone to enjoy my stories but I'm kinda scared to even put it up. I think I will do it, but just be cautious about it. -

Make sure you enable the password protection in the edit screen for your author page. (At least that's where I think it is) Then no one but SW people can see it. If you google your opening sentence someday and it shows up somewhere besides SW, you know that someone that viewed your page took it. I know you can see who views your pages if you're a gold member. If you know someone stole from you, you can probably get help finding who's on that list.

Question:
Hi guys
I just wanted to know - If I manage to get published in a magazine or something, will I have to take down my story from this website first?
Thank you! -
-
Sometimes, but usually not always, if it's just a magazine or e-zine. That's more or less determined by the publisher's demands I believe.
Here's the forum that could help you with more publishing questions: http://storywrite.com/board/show/4 -
I pull my stuff down whether they want me to or not. It helps me remember what I've gotten published.
Also, different publishers will demand their publishing rights for different amounts of time. I've seen everything from the rights reverting to you upon publication, to having to wait 18 months before you can publish it anywhere else.
Just check with what the different ezines say, and follow what they ask for.

No. Not off this site.
For my romanian stories and poems I use another site. Over the years I've gathered there hundreds of stories and poems so once I couldn't find a specific poem even though I knew the title so I googled it. I found about 15 of my poems and stories under another name on blogspot. They've been taken down since, but now I'm more careful with my work.
I doubt someone would even think about copying my work from SW. even a 12 year old writes better than me in english...but I'm not giving up that easily.
Thank you.
