The ones that are available for free people aren't that great. What'll it take to get a couple new ones?

A silver/gold membership?
Heh, just kidding. There's been talk before about transferring the "free level" backgrounds on AP over here to SW. Apparently they have a lot more over there. I'm all for that; there are a lot of backgrounds here that I just never use.

Just go earn it like I did; comment a lot once a week.
Why pay when I can take an hour or two a week and get it for free?

Can you earn a silver membership by commenting or just a gold? I know gold is the top position, but if you get 2nd or 3rd do you earn a silver like on AP?

I don't think Mass commenting is very fair. so i'll stick with my freebie membership.

Some people do that mass-commenting thing, and it's not cool. Others of us actually read and comment usefully to earn the reward we get. One way is to look up a closed contest with a topic that interests you, and read all the entries. Very entertaining! There are a ton of stories that don't get a lot of face time because they're written off a prompt that only came around once, but they're still great stories, and I like to think those who wrote them are happy to have someone read them now and again, just because. I know I am.
I think the site has just put in some block that won't let you post comments that are identical (aka spamming comments), so that's useful. I've seen that happen more than once, and I hope it's a thing of the past. -

I don't like the mass-commenting if it's spammy or someone who isn't really reading the material.
There's been a lot of times where I just read/commented, not paying any attention to how many I was doing in one day, and would log on the next morning to find a nice surprise telling me that I won the week of gold/silver membership

I agree that there should be more of a selection for the the free level backgrounds. And as Val already stated, I remember reading a topic of talks on transferring some of the AP free level backgrounds to SW... but I think that was a while ago and I don't know what was ever decided (or if it was even decided) on that.
What'll it take to get a couple new ones?
Probably some begging... sucking up...

I second this motion. Sometimes it's hard as a free member to not use the same one over and over again, gets kind of boring, and I like some color on my pages, so the default is kind of boring to me.

I usually use the site's default background because I'm too lazy to try to get a text combo that I can read easily with backgrounds.

Though i don't know much about backgrounds and such, i think there should be a wide verity to those who choose the free membership. No splicing. Just because a free person can't affort to upload a neat backgrounnd doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to have a nice one.

Do what i usually do.
Read the stories and spare your comments for weekends. Stay awake whole of the night and comment.
