I was just thinking maybe we should have a thread made just for the little rantings as oppose to starting one everytime somebody is upset about being cut off in traffic or their math teacher yelled at them. Just come here and scream.
-
great idea
-
I like it. Another site I go to has a "rant thread" for that purpose, and it works really well.
At this time I have no rant, though. Carry on. -
No rant from me either right now
Have fun- I'll be here when I need to
-
People are always bitchin' about something.
What are we a bunch of social workers or writers?
As with the job people should not air their dirty laundry in public, it makes for bad form.
We should have a policy: Leave your problems off the site because really who cares? (unless it has to do with the actual writing process)
I come on this site to write and maybe, socialize but wouldn't come on to complain about my personal life. Or any other problems that really aren't anyone else's business and they wouldn't want to know about anyway. -
Ha,Ha! You're a funny guy, Humphrey Bogart.
I am agreeing with you, frankly I don't give a rat's behind about other people's problems.
Why not create a group where the ranters can go and whine and bitch but, have to pay the group leader 50 points for every rant.
Then they can whine and complain (and the group leader wouldn't have to read it at all).
And the group leader could collect points.
Feels like win-win situation all around.
If the ranter can't afford to give up the points then he/she has to shut up.
-
Call it the Put up or Shut up Group. Or something like that.
Get all the Twilighters and Stephanie Meyers fans and tweens and teeny-boppers and seal them into a box and send them to a foreign country along with the whiners & complainers.
Sounds like a plan.
-
-
That'll leave like five of us.
-
I support this idea.
-
Hey, not all tweens are horreed!
-
-
Not all but, most especially the ones that want to sign my guestbook with "OMG!!!! This page is sooooo cool!!!!! I defentely have to read your stuff and will dooo that now!!!"
or read a story and leave silly little messages and comments like this was goowd and the lama and elf were at the zoo...weeeee!!! I think yure a grete writer.....ect.
Really?!
-
-
-
Five is a a beautiful number.
Although, I have so many people on my ignore list that I am barely talking to anyone now.
The best features on SW: The delete and ignore buttons.
My favorites.
-
Wow. I almost did forget. I don't use that button much--being naturally uncharming and anti-social, I can boast to being the most unpopular person here.
I kinda like that.
-
Okay... cool.

Here's a rant.
People who slam youth on this site. Would you (collective) prefer them out stealing, doing drugs, getting pregnant? ... or, on an internet site like this, reading, writing, and discovering the world of literature (and yes, Twilight is literature.... as much as it pains me to say that). There's a whole generation out there that's in danger of turning their backs on reading.... don't make it easier for them to do that.
So, hey... cut the youth some slack
(or I'll be reminding people about the site policy of 'Your being here is contingent upon your interacting in a friendly manner with the community.')

Contests
when checking out the 'new contests' page it's the titles, naturally, that grab my attention. When I decide and click on one, the first thing I check is their age. Then I read on.
What bothers me are contests where the host obviously has a problem with spelling, grammar and punctuation. A slip up here and there, fine happens to everyone. But if all you have is two or three paragraphs and they're riddled with errors...
Do I really want you to read what I wrote or do I care what you think? Can I take criticism from someone writing 'I will now if you read teh rules. Use good grammer, Im a speling nazi!!1!!'
Would it be wrong to give a review of a contest? -
-
Honestly, I can't agree more with your points here. I usually do not enter those contests either because I feel that if someone is going to judge something properly, they should showcase themselves in the contest information properly as well. If I find the information riddled with errors, I tend to steer away from the page.
Although, I must admit that I have entered a few anyway- just simply for the fun of it
but I usually find that when I do enter, I don't really get the comments I look for. Nine times out of ten, they're like, "OMGZ- I loooovvveezz this. Thnx for enterng!" and then when I check the other entries- the judge is saying practically the same thing to everyone else

depends on how you put your 'review' of contest. There have been several times where I wanted to tell a contest judge that if they're going to proclaim themselves as a spelling/grammar nazi (and yet riddle the contest page with outrageous errors), then they needed to showcase that in their contest description. But I bit my tongue and just moved on
-
I get annoyed that it seems to be cool to look like you're bad at English. Especially when it's the only language you speak. No wonder America's schools are full of fail.

The teenagers who use proper sentences and good SPaG in their contests and stories, they're the ones that grab my attention. Many of them have simply fabulous stories as well, and if anyone's going to go forward to publish and be taken seriously, my money's on them. The rest seem to be here for the social aspects. -
I hate going to the contest page and seeing so many contests with titles like, "YAY! CLICK HERE! Totally awesome contest! Please enter! But nothing stupid!"

Seriously, do they expect me to be interested?

well im gonna rant you might not like it but i am going to. i have a dentist apointment today cuse iv got a cavity. it should be drilled anf fillable instead of pulled. i had one pulled before. i hate dentisits with a passion. i hate people messing with my mouth. iv had bad experinces at dentisits. if i could aford the sedation dentistry i would go for it but id have someone in the room with me and the dentist. like i will when im here this time. novicane makes me all foggy headed and makes my stomack upset. i dont like that feeling. i feel so high on novicane. i know that feeling do to medication iv been on in the past. i do not like that feeling. so im so angrey for haveing another cavity. its the second one in my hole 24 years of life iv had. second one in two years as well. so im so uggg about it. and so you know some people dont post stories but arent here for just the social stuff. iv posted stories before but well things happened i delted them. i want to be a published writer. i want to make it in the writing world. i dont know if i ever will but i would like to. i am right now totaly blocked up on writing i hate that iv got two books im working on and im so going blank. i have a third one being published though and its almost done with that. problem is it was a vanity publisher. yeah iv gone that route and the self publish rout. nether were very good. iv got a friend who is makeing her own publishing site. she actualy is gonna push to get it out there to bookstores well acording to her she will. i think i might use her. not sure. iv been trying to get in contact with another publisher but they havent been responding and its very annoying. they are a self publisher but seem to be better than publish america and there free as well. i dont know why they arent responding to me iv tried to get in contact with them so i could get a book published but no responce. so it sucks. becomeing a writer who is even slightly known is very hard to do. i have two others published and yet they dont sell. with number three on the way well im hopeing it will sell. i love to write its my outlet of anger and frustration with certain things. it also get my worrying to go away. but when im blocked up thats when my anxiety and annger and frustration seem to get worse. so well this is my rant...
-
-
I'm glad you came here to rant as oppose to starting a thread about it. But I gotta say, the block paragraph, typos and lack of punctuations make it really hard to follow you. I know this isn't a 'story' or something you're submitting for publication but, this is a writing site and EVERYTHING you write is a reflection of you.

Ah contests, what can I say about those?
Lately it seems that most of the contests don't have any backbone to them.
Most of the hosts are bad at spags and even spelling, and don't care that they don't know the subject that they are conducting their contests in.
If I have to edit the contest in order to understand what the host is trying to "say" it's a sure fire sign that the contest is going to be a bust, so why bother to enter it?
Writing well shouldn't have to be a requirement, everyone should strive to write well.
There's no excuse for bad writing, and those who don't try to improve will never reach their zenith. -
The good thing is that we don't have to buy their books, as I usually read a book before buying it.
With the writers here, I just earmark them just so that if I do run into them in the future I know not to read what they have written.
There's nothing worse than a writer who refuses to want to improve, except for one who knows his/her writing is bad and decides that it's okay to be that way.
If not here to improve, why bother at all?
As one column reads: Bad writing is not a style. That writer made some good points and the column was amusing. -
i can not spell the best i admit that. i dont punctuate that well when im not writing a book. i try to write better when writing a book. i have to have an editor for spelling though. i admit my first two books were not edited but my third one is. just cuse a writer doesnt punctuate or spell great on chat or forums doesnt mean they dont do a darn good job of it when there writeing books. iv read letters and other things from authors that iv read books of. not all of them make such a huge effort to spell and all that when not writing a book. it doesnt mean there a bad writer. in fact many of them are very good at constructing stories.
-
-
Perhaps it is, in fact, possible for people to spell/write badly in some contexts and still be good writers in others, but that begs the following question - if they are capable of writing properly, why on earth would they ever want to do otherwise? If they already have a proper understanding of grammar/spelling/punctuation guidelines, it requires no extra effort whatsoever on their part to abide by them 100% of the time. My personal opinion is that doing otherwise indicates a lack of professionalism and makes readers think less of one's intelligence, and assuming that these are not really the case, I'm sure you'd like to prevent people from thinking that they are.
I don't mean to criticize anyone who's still in the process of learning all the rules about SPaG, because that can take quite a while, and I'll admit that I'm not completely familiar with them myself. My real point, though, is that I think that you should always write at the highest level that you can, whatever that level may be. Take 'em or leave 'em, but those are my two cents on the matter.

Can I rant?
There are drunk people outside my house. One of them was looking for a salamander after he fell, after he tried for ten minutes to get his shoe on.
There are no salamanders here.
I live in Southeastern Idaho.

Anti-Twilighters
these...people...
Why? Why waste so much time and effort bashing a book written by someone who most likely a-will never see your sad little tantrum and b-never give a
?
I don't like Twilight either but guess what, it's not the first book I read and didn't like. My wife tried to get me to read the Anita Blake series and I couldn't, just didn't care for the characters. I'm not about to start an anti-Anita Blake group or mention my hatred for the series in every thread I come across, whether it calls for it or not. Same with Harry Potter. Again, why should I care if someone else likes it?
That's just stupid.
So a lot of people (mostly teen girls) like the book and wish they were Bella. That hurts you...how?
Truth be told half of the twilight haters seceretly love it and have already preordered their movie tickets. The other half are just bitter, now that vampire 'novel' they've been working on sounds like a Twilight rip-off and will never be published (as if it stood a chance to begin with).
If anything the success of Twilight has given writers more opportunites. You can't tell me that agents and publishers alike aren't looking for the next big vampire story.
I could go on but I think that's enough for now. I'm off to start an Anti-Canterbury Tales Group...

good points
I admit (and not embarrassed to) that I once semi-liked Twilight- the first book moreso than the actual series. In saying this, what I mean exactly is that I liked the romance... the storyline. I wasn't too fond of the characterization or the "sparkly", but
that's the author's doing and it has been her own success so props to her for that. I'm not going to hate on her. She's the one making millions of dollars right now, not me

It's not much interest to me, but I'm not going to waste my time ranting about it either (and no, I'm not talking about you CactusJack- I'm referring to Twi-Haters who are constantly ranting about Twilight)
We get it. You don't like Twilight. Drop it already.

However, I do have to disagree with one of the points you made. The success of Twilight and some other vampire fiction has made it harder on writers to get their material published unless you have something insanely different and out-there. Even then, good luck. I know this from experience. Searching through countless agent listings and coming up with numerous "NO VAMPIRES!" gets a little disheartening on my end.
But, I'm not giving up
-
Oi!!!!
Lay off the Canterbury Tales, otherwise I'll set up an "I hate the Cactus Chronicles as written by Jack" Group
I believe in cycles - no! not >
, those that come around every so often. I reckon it's almost time for the return of "The Western", which will mean, of course, new emots of black and white hats, shaven and unshaven faces, half-chewed cheroots et al
By the way! I enjoyed your rant Jack; although I'm over halfway through my seventh decade, I still have too much living to do to worry about who hates what
-
-
Perhaps
unless you have something insanely different it shouldn't be published.
But I do see your point. -
It does seem that everything has been done before...but, that started just after Adam and Eve (for all you believers) or since man started walking on hind legs (for all you Darwinists).
An edge is definitly needed when writing about a popular subject--which may be why Stephanie Meyers made her vampires sparkle in the sunlight and live--as opposed to burning up ugly in the process and dying.
I guess, it's the whole process of thinking outside the box--way out of it, so that the old reads like new and not remind others of refried beans.
It's a tall order for writers these days and quite daunting, but worth the effort I think.
in your mouth* I wish more people would read ... the maybe I could get along with the general masses
