Inspired by the 'how do you name your characters' thread, I decided to see what our favourite names are. Either from a book you read, or your own creation.
Mine are Ardin - a real name - and Inarisa (made up).
  • Chandra and Sylvia. Real names.

I like Robert and Michael, but I hate the shortened forms!
And Sarah's quite nice. Not sure about Amanda, though.
  • For boys, I like Eli, Sydney, and Dmitri. For girls, I like Charlotte and Beatrice.

I also love Greek names. Persephone stands out the most to me, I think it's a beautiful name.
    • The Greeks have a lot of good ones =) Persephone's also a favorite of mine.

I've always thought that Andromeda was another neat one for girls. Maybe Perseus for the guys.
      • Oh, Andromeda is a very beautiful name! And Perseus is nice, although I think my favorite man's name is Apollo. When I read about the god, the name just stuck out to me.

Dmitri is just awesome! Beatrice I don't like simply because there is a vicious dog near me called Beatrice! But Charlotte and Persephone are nice as well. Even though I thought for many years that Persephone was pronounced Purr-sef-Own!
      • It's okay. I thought that it was pronounced that for awhile, too.

        Who names their dog Beatrice?

I like Vincent for a guy name. For girls, Crystal and Violet. I have a thing for names starting with V I guess.

Not too keen on Crystal unless the character is really showy! But V names are cool.

Crystal has to be played correctly. It's one of those names that can make or break the character. If done wrong, it can really sound cheesy

I like Naviah (meaning prophetess) for a girl and Josiah for a boy. Josiah was the young boy king that wiped out idolatry in Israel at the age of twenty. He crushed the idols, smashed them into dust. Unfortunately, his son helped build them back up again.

Not so hot on Mary and Noah but the rest of those are pretty cool. I would just find it odd writing a story about a guy called Noah.

Jasmine, Yasmina (from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), Azmeena, and Meena. Jasmine is my pseudonym for fantasy, and Meena is a character in my novel.

I've had other fave names in the past, but they've faded now that I've had kids I got to name. I used to love Ian, Ewan, Ethan, Michael, Essa, Ella, Adrielle, Aerynn, Erin, Erynn. And probably more I can't recall. I got tired of using the names so often in stories, when they were for different people, though.

I rarely get to use my fav names in stories. They never fit the character. Except for Lola, she was fun.
      • Same with me. I almost named a character Beatrice once, but I scrapped her because she was showing Sue-ish tendencies.

I've chosen to keep my favorite names on the back burner for possible future children instead.

lol. Since the kid thing won't be happening for me, my characters are my kids. Although pets do come in handy, you just run into the same problem of them not fitting the name.

If I'm using a real name, I ALWAYS look up th meaning - If I've got a main character whose name means "Death to the nice people" or something stupid, I want to justify that in the story - maybe his parents were nasty?
And I love most welsh names. Kai is awesome. And Gareth...and they happen to be actors...LOL.
      • I like Welsh names too. That's why they half of them are. I didn't know Kai and Gareth were actor names.

Torchwood's Rhys and Ianto (another great name).
I love anything starting Ia- or Ie- because it sounds Welsh. I invent a lot of Welsh-sounding names (at least I think so!)
I want to go to Uni in Wales to have an excuse to learn Welsh

For girls I like the names Ava, Emma, Audrey, Cosette and Kylie.

For boys I like Gavin, Jayden, Wyatt and Ewan.

All are real names, I have no talent in making them up
  • I love guys names!

For girls I love Emma, Kaylee, Cameron, Jordyn and Mikayla. Of course, Alex works for most girl chracters, but some have to be developed to find a name that fits their personality. I have recently used Tallie, Mary, and Grace.

For boys I like to use Ari- meaning lion, Jonas (no i hate the jonas brothers but i love jonas for an adventurous boy- either that or jona,) I like Renjad, I made it up for a story. I also really love using Ruben, it is something about it that makes me like it. I love the name Brahm... I have some connection with Brahm, not from Eragon, that is Brom but this on is like half my life! I love it! I most recentely used Connor, Charlie, and Johnny. I am more adventurous with boy names than girl names.

In my most recent book I am using, Johnny, Emma, Jordan, Charlie, Carrie, Pat, Daniel, Ruben, and Marsha. I am using others but I like those a lot!

Any name can suit anyone at any time. I like mixing up names, with giving a strong character a whimpy name, and making him earn the respect of the others in the story (big bad biker dude name Elmer... ). The person doesn't necessarily have to fit the name, since when a parent names an infant, they have no idea what that child will grow up to be. Picking a longer name, or an interesting middle name can make the character have a lot of different options. Example (I'm using my own daughter's name here) Alexandra = Allie, Al, Lexi, Sandra, Sandy, Alex, Ally, Ali, Dra, and a few others. Her middle name is Quinn, so she's sort of limited there.

I don't do the 'Harlequin Romance' names like: Thorn, Chad, Lance... things like that. Although, I did name one charater 'Stone', but his I explained the reason for that in the story, so...

I never borrow names from family members... that's just bad mojo.

Don't really have favorite names... I just use whatever name seems right for the character.

I try to picture the character and just start listing names in my head. I don't have a favorite name, but i just think hmm...you are .... !
  • Hmm?

I invented Loriata and Marika, I think. It's hard to know for certain, there are so many names. For monsters, I also have Gorgorus and Atomka.

For some reason, I like Becca, short for Rebecca. I've used it with female characters often; those which usually don't get killed. In my stories, female characters are often victims, but they're pretty safe if I name them Becca.

Ha, i know a Becca. And a Beccy. and before I met them I never knew anyone who spelt it CC not CK!
      • I've never known a real person named Becca.

But there was one on a soap opera I watched for a while; I can't remember the name of the show. I liked her character and the name stuck with me. The name was only spoken in the soap, so the choice of the spelling was mine.
