I sent a couple poems in to Iliad Press in college, and didn't buy the anthology. That's it for me. Are the publishers you used print-on-demand, or vanity publishers (or a 3rd option, but judging by your dissatisfaction, those are the two that come to mind first)?

I've been published in a ton of different places. Right now, it's over a dozen times, including one novel publication.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend PA to anyone based solely on the fact that they have such a bad rap, and because they overcharge for their books. In my opinion, you're better off self-publishing than giving your work to someone who's going to overcharge your book.

I've published myself three time with lulu.com, and have been published a few times in magazines and eZines.

I'm am satisfied with the vast majority of these publishers. I wasn't particularly impressed with Long Story Short because their e-mails were always full of links to their writing classes, but that's really the only complaint I have.

For a beginning writer, Rose & Thorn e-zine was fantastic.
