You finish it first. Which is the hardest part.

Find a good agent. He/she will get your through to publishers ... then you send them manuscripts. Strike a deal...get published!

Of course it's never that simple ....
  • Actually...

publishers only ask for first three chapters, so there's no need to finish it first.

Really? Cool. That's good to know. But do they stick around long enough so you can finish it??

        Once you cash the advance,

i think you get about 8 months to turn it in. But don't take that as gosple.

Some of the more industrious writers write the first three chapters, start submitting, and then start writing first three chapters from another novel idea, and start submitting that as well, and so on until one gets accepted and only then finish it.

Upside; don't spend years on something that will never sell.
Downside; you got a deadline to meet.

I can see the genius behind it, but the technique is no use to me as i would never hit the deadline. (unless it was like 3 years)
  • thanks for that i wanted to knwo for when i am older

A lot of agents I've seen only want a completed manuscript. o__o Plus, eight months isn't a lot of time for fine tuning, especially a first novel. (It took me a year and a half for mine, but a year is the average time)

It helps to check out "Writer's Market"; or visit their website..I forget the name. They have a VERY detailed list of agents/small presses/publishers/magazines you can send your work into. A VERY big help towards getting my work out there. The only disadvantage: You may find yourself writing more than your mentality can stand in the hopes of sending piece after piece out...Hehe.

I hate to be a downer, but you're highly unlikely to land an agent if you're an unpublished, first-time writer. It's better to have credits in advance before querying agents.

All it costs is a little time to try. Who knows, you may be the next Norra Roberts or Stephen King but if you don't try...
