When I get writers block it means that i am stressing myself and my characters and i ease off for a while and write some shorter stories and/or some essays and work around the problem until i see a way through then rework what i have written and let the characetrs lead the way.

I hate getting what is known as "Writers Block." The worst part is... normally- as I start to break through- I still have to recover and slowly work myself back to where I was.
My advice to get out of it? Getting input always helps me- a fresh perspective on the same scene allows me to see what really should be there. Even hearing some ideas about what should go there-(i.e. "How would you write it?") help to unblock the dam of creativity and move ahead.

That's true. Sometimes,it's hard to see where it is that you're going with your writing because you're too close to the subject. Some people have some good ideas--if you don't want to show them the story you can just tell them where you are at and what is happening in the story and offer a few details that they can work with without revealing your story line--as some writers don't like the idea of others seeing their work-in-progress. But, overall it's best to tell them a bit about the work and say what do you think would/should happen here and like that--other people can be more helpful than you may think.

Yeah, kind of like painters. You have to take a step back sometimes to see what you're doing.
My problem is I don't really have anyone to share my writing with. Plus I hardly ever get "stuck" but I do get out of the mood from time to time and will go on breaks of months.
Anyway as to the original problem, my characters have gone "on strike" (
I like that). Usually when that happens, when I've put them through so much, they get rewarded, something good happens to them, they get a reprise in the action, just something to offset all the bad.
I think that's good actually because I'm sure the readers need a break too. Readers need to be rewarded for following these characters so far. So let's say my character's a prisoner and has been tortured, he might not get to escape, but he has some victory over a mean cell mate. It's just enough to make the reader cheer him on through the hard times.
So I say if you're stuck with one tactic in a story, try another. Good luck, hope this helped. -
When I get writers block, I add details to what already happened. It could be as simple as describing what a location looks like or what someone is wearing. I know it doesn't seem like much, but at times it has helped, suprisingly.
Otherwise, write about something completly different. Take a break. Write something you never wrote before. Listen to music. All can help when trying to get rid of writers block.
Also, look over your material. Sometimes, you don't actually see where you are going with a story, and it can help to take out details that don't make sense and add them into another part of your story.
Jump around when writing. Write the ending, or a part in the middle. It can help you see where you want your story to go.
