Really thats all I see now on this site and alot of others. Whats with them? Do peopl forget the origins of them or something? There is a reason why they are evil.
-
People like romanticizing them. You know, they're like the cool "bad boy" who is confident and charming and strong and can do anything and doesn't care what other people think.
Never mind that they suck blood and kill people etc.
But you get that a lot, I think. Certain characters who are meant to be bad/evil characters seem to draw people to them. I think it's mostly when these characters are given a background and a history people can relate to. -
Actually.. I would liketo correct something here as I've done a lot of research on the legend of vampires.
the vampire legend has been around since ancient times- most commonly seen in ancient egyptian heiroglyphs. They were originally portrayed to be immortal people that walked among us (yes, in daylight... no, not freakin' sparkly). They drank blood. They loved mortals, and not just for food. It is believed the first vampire depicted in the heiroglyphs was later portrayed to be one of the 'gods'.
It was as time passed, that the legend evolved into a creature of the night- confined to the darkness and would turn to ash in the sunlight. They were then labeled evil demons.. and people began practicing rituals to keep corpses from coming back as vampires (i.e. bricks in mouths, holy water sprinkled on the body and coffin, etc etc.)
Then, the legend evolved yet again due to Bram Stoker mostly... and later Anne Rice.. romanticizing them (again, let me clarify that. It was not the first time that the legend had been romanticized.. just in published literature, it was)
I am a proud fiction writer of vampires. I feel that legends are going to evolve. Just like werewolf legends have evolved...
It's also the whole idea of the immortal life. The idea appeals to the human race. In all time periods, it has. Take alchemysts (I probably spelled that wrong, sorry) for example. Many of them killed themselves trying to figure out the secret and the special 'potion' to live forever. Many people fear death, and would jump at the opportunity to live for an eternity- watching the world grow and evolve.
These are the modern times. Who's to say that our 'vampires' now, necessarily have to kill people to sustain their thirst?
The romantic idea of living an eternity with someone you love is also very appealing. That is why people love vampires so much I believe. Dark, mysterious, immortal..
I understand that they are currently very popular and maybe a little overdone, but it depends on how well someone can pull off the subject while staying original.

Excellent points!! Mind if I add some things????
cool!
I posted this on another topic, but I'm too lazy to type it out again, so ...
copy and paste
Since Vampires are mythical creatures created from legends, myth, folklore and genreally made up, who's to say what is real and what isn't? Stories passed down and to others usually contain some changes, and even difference when put into writing. The folklore for Vampires that is around today originates almost exclusively from early 18th century
Bram Stoker's Dracula provided the basis of the modern vampire legend. He can shapeshift, levitate to an extent, has hypnotic and mind control abilities, and... he has fangs. Fangs were not a common thing among legends of vampires before that story (or at least before that time period).
which is kinda what you said, really....

Oy.. I am so sorry for being so long winded and chatty
I get rambly at times.. my apologies
-
its just a sign of overuse
Vampires have gone from villians (dracula), to anti heroes (Lestat), to just heroes. same with serial killers, (see dexter)
but then you get cop shows and medical dramas going the other way, (see the shield and nip/tuck) -
I just dont get the whole Hero thing and the glittering drives me up a bloody wall. Now Lestat was a great one I got to say Rice is very good but now writing about them for children is just stupid. Oh heres a fun fact they say Judus was the first after trying to hang himself from a yew or mybe ash tree I belive. Again they are EVIL forget the night stalking blood sucking for a moment they are evil not nice even if they dont drink blood.....Any one se the southpark about it lol.

the hero thing is because of the immortality I think. Plus some legends have them as beautiful creatures (to lure prey). So put together people want to worship them.
I've only heard of the Judas thing from "Gabriel Knight: blood of the sacred blood of the damned" video game (which they might have gotten in part from "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" but not sure if the Judas part comes from there. Was this brought up somewhere else? If so I'd love to know where, I thought it was a great idea and very different. One of my favorite origin legends.
Some go back further than that to Lilith and or Cain, depending on the story, as to who actually was the first vampire. -
I don't know where you are getting this evil thing from. Sure if you buy into a lot of religious tradition then yeah, vampires are evil but otherwise, what is so wrong about feeding ones hunger. I eat cows and pigs and fish and birds all the time... Another thing, what makes a vampire evil if it isn't an indiscriminate "murderer" of people?
There are also people who say Jesus was a vampire too

Vampires are fun to play around with in writing, too.
-
They are fun to write about and can be cool.
That is how the originals were written, but vampires can be anything you want them to be because your the author and you control the characters and story.
I have vampires. Only two of them are evil though out of the four that I have. Well, main character vampires. -
I like reading about them but I find so much difficulty finding GOOD vampire prose. Mostly the stuff on here can be compared to festering wounds with ooze dripping off the side of a bandaid...
I've successfully written about vampires twice. The first was a short story in which my vamps were disgusting creatures that reeked. And ate everybody and conducted evil genetic experiments to create massive, terrible beasts (worse than themselves actually). Lots of fun there. My second was an twilight parody/rant. Because those books can be compared to festering, maggot-infested wounds with no bandaid and buckets of blood, puss, and ooze pouring out and still not even scratch the surface of that abhorrid piece of paper. -
Not all vampires in the past were evil though, many were also wrongly prosecuted like witches. People in the old country sometimes didn't really die, but the people thought they did and so when they woke up and started showing those symptoms and thus some vampire legends were born. Not evil, but people thought they were.
My personal favorite is the legends of the type of vampire that dies either of suicide or had done some horrible sin, comes back to life and visits old family members then proceeds to suck the blood of their victims from their toe. Also not really evil, but can be seen as such. Some of them were romanticized over too as some made love to their spouses. I need to double check my vampire encyclopedia though because I think I might have a couple different legends mixed up, but how cool of a story would that make?
The thing is vampires are so varied and looking at lore there are hundreds of types and attributes so really they're fun to play with because you can change them around. While sparkling is a little silly it's unique and different. Everyone has their own interpretation.
I do admit I like reading vampire stories about the older type, like pixie's egyptian ones (I have an egyptian vampire in my story too
) and especially the ones that look like little monster, you know some of the older european legends. You know the ones; ones that have to stop to count a pile of beans, others that look like gremlins, not just the modern beautiful ones (though I like those too).
One of these days I will run a contest asking only for these kind.
(talk about long winded
)

There was a story by RL Stine, How to Be a Vampire, I think, where thsi kid manages to survive by knocking a jar of marbles to the floor and running for it while the vampire stands there transfixed, automatically counting them...kinda stupid now that I think about it. Why are vampires and math BFF?

I completely agree with the bad-boy portrayal of vampires, but too much romanticizing of bloodsuckers has left me craving a vampire novel where there is slightly less lust on the vampire's mind and more blood-lust, you know? I mean, it's like, every novel you pick up, be it Twilight, or a House of Night novel, the vampires are horny and make me want to slap them. -__- I don't see how getting your neck pierced with inch long blades is "sexually pleasurable". Those people have clearly never had vaccines or gotten tattooed.
I personally love the varying portrayals of vamps in different stories. Some have awesome myths too, truly original. I read this story on Fictionpress about vampires and angels and it has so far broken every cliche I can think of! I'm sincerely hoping it gets published. It'd put Twilight to shame easy. Then again, a LOT puts Twilight to shame, but I'm just saying.
It's called The Slave of Heaven Rewrite if anyone's interested. Highly recommended.
Anyways, vampires are amazing villains. THey're IDEAL, I guess.

yeah, but without getting too "adult" here, there are actually people who have fetishes that find it "sexually pleasurable." I personally don't have that or understand it (I hate needles so can't go anywhere near there), but a nip here and there while making out is a little exciting, so I can see where the lure came from.

I think that the whole vampire theme is over-done. It needs a rest--no pun intended. It's like, nowadays everyone and their grandmothers want to be vampires and that's all good if it's done right. Writers just throw a characters together and place him in a
