I was told you weren't suppose to use contractions unless in dialogue. Has anyone else been told this? I've been following that rule, but it seems like it makes the flow a little choppy.
  • I've never heard that rule. o.0
I'd say, don't follow someone else's rules. Unless you want to get published because editors and stuff seem to like it when you listen to them...
  • Scratch that, proper grammar and spelling are good rules to follow.

*Laughs* So are you saying stick with what I've been doing?
    • Yup. As long as you're writing for your own pleasure then write however you want.

By the way, when you want to reply to a specific person, you can click 'Reply' beneath that person's name. Then that person will be notified you replied to them.

  • I think it varies.

The only time I'm really strict about that rule is when I'm writing some sort of essay, or something similar. Also, if your story's in first-person and your character speaks like that, go for it. Otherwise, I agree-- it tends to break up the flow and sound a bit forced.

If you get up into technical writing classes like Composition 2, or if you're writing scientific or historical essays, then you won't be allowed to use contractions.

However, in prose, there are no rules - only guidelines Contractions help with the flow in creative writing, so go for it. Use them when you feel they're right, and not when you don't
