Only if it fits her character
No! Why screw up a good thing?
Yes, everyone should want a kid.
No. I'm writing/reading romance, we all know kids kill that.
Yes, it helps me connect with the character.
Yes. I don't read/write in the genre but I feel like adding my two cents and annoying everyone with a long-winded, self-absorbed comment with a few twelve syllable atrocities from my word-a-day calendar.
    No. See Above reason.

    K, I'll admit it. I don't want kids. There. I said it.

I have nothing against children, nor do I have anything against those women who want children or see it for themselves in the future. I think motherhood can be a beautiful thing.

And if the character is that type of character, where her happily ever after includes sprouting some little ones with her soulmate, then so be it.

That's just not a big whoop-de-doo in my own happily-ever-after, and thank God I have my CactusJack who understands and agress with me.

In some stories, it's an important part of the plot.
(I went with 'No. See Above reason.')
  • I'll admit I've never even picked up a romance novel. Even if it was Brad Pitt on the cover. Does this pregnancy thing happen often? It seems like it would carry the genre in to something else entirely.
  • I've also never read a romance novel in my life. Really not my thing. But in my opinion, I think having a kid would mess things up. So I guess if I read romance novels, I wouldn't like if the chick got pregnant.

I don't try to read romances, but the stuff I like tends to be a blend of things that happen to include romance. If you were to ask me what genre of writing do I like best, I'd instantly answer: sci-fi or fantasy.

But a lot of sci-fi/ fantasy has heavy romance elements. Vampires and werewolves and demons and warriors who find the love of their life in the course of the book.

Like Anita Blake- Vampire Hunter, or the Dark-Hunter series, or the Twilight series (which, I admit, is heavy on the romance side but so perfect, I could care less).

I just hate it when they toss the kids in as if that's neccessary for every couple to be happy.

i absolutely love the anita blake vampire hunter novels
and yeah, the girl getting pregnant really does totally screw up the story
  • I don't read romances myself. I don't like happy endings.
I prefer death and destruction, but that's just me. lol

While pregnancy may bring out a maternal instinct in some female readers, I don't write for them so no, why screw up a good thing? *chuckles*

    hmmm...

No,not unless she's been through a lot with her lover, and is old enough, say 27.
  • Yes and No

Sometimes it's a good thing when they are looking for that thing and other times it really brings things back from the brink that makes the story really good. It all depends on the circumstance and how the character takes/sees it. If they are totally against having kids and the heroine becomes pregnant, well it's baby showers and no more killing the bad monsters.

    It's all in perspective.

    depends.

if she's really young, then no. but as the heroine of the story, i'd probably want her to remain independent and stuff. but i'd need to know more about the character to say more.

I have read a couple of romances and I think it totally depends on the character! It would be like saying 'If you/your parter got pregnant in real life would you like it?' Well yes you may do if you were trying for a child or were in the possision to support that child. On the other hand if you are fourteen then no I dont think you would like it, or if you were a fourty-nine year old married mother of five who had had an affair with the milk man then again no. It seems like a silly question to me really all things considered.

Personally I love children and have wanted to have my own since it occured to me that babies werent just something aunties produce on a regular basis in order for me to have new play mates, lol. I was eight when I realised that I would be a woman one day and capable of baking them in my own oven as it were. I think that it is a truly powerful thing that women can do that a man could never understand. Ok, so most men would tell you that child-birth and pregnancy would be the last thing they wanna experience but come on people! As a woman I have the power to creat life inside me! My body can create a whole new person! Now tell me anything that anyone can do that is more powerful than that?

I've found that the heroine getting pregnant helps a certain age group of readers connect with the character. It all depends what audience you are trying to reach. I couldn't pick two answers, but the heroine in the story getting pregnant should fit the story also. I know, I'm writing a story where the children are essential to its ending, or rather new beginning.
