I, too, don't feel that featuring is a good use of points. I've found that the two best ways of getting comments are entering contests and adding friends to my friends list, replying whenever they message me or comment. You can also put your stories in group reading lists, but I don't get a lot of response from that.
When I do use points, it's usually to host contests or as gifts.
