There is a pleasure in the pathless woods;
There is a rapture on the lonely shore;
There is a society where none intrude,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar.
I love not man less, but nature more...
Lord Byron.

...Oh, dip my emptied life into that ocean,
plunge it into the deepest fullness.
Let me for once feel that sweet touch
in the allness of the Universe.

Oceans Of Forms
I dive into the depth of the ocean form, hoping to gain
the perfect pearl of the formless. No more sailing from
harbor to harbor with this my weather-beaten boat.
The days are long passed when my sport would be tossed
on waves. And now I am eager to die into the deathless.
Into the audience hall of the fathomless abyss. Where
swells up the music of toneless strings I shall take
this harp of my life. I shall tune it to the notes of
forever, and when it has sobbed out its last utterance,
lay down my silent harp at the fell of the silent.
by Rabindranath Tagore

On Captain! My Captain!
1.
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought
is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all
exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim
and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
2.
O Captain! my Captain!
rise and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung--
for you the bugle trills;
For you the bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths--
for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swinging mass,
their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.
3.
My Captain does not answer,
his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm,
he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound,
its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship
come in with objects won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
--Walt Whitman (1819-1892)
(O Captain! my Captain! poem from
Leaves Of Grass 1900)
