  • Fizz Ferlie : A short synopsis of ‘The tailboom o’ how tae cha the teel o’ a hon beetlenut gurl.’ on July 27
‘Tailboom’ is a otopian comedy adventure about a man who turns into a hare as a result of chemical poisoning. As this transformation occurs, the other people in the town also metamorphise into various ‘manimals’. As a result of the confusion caused by this occurance, Abraham Bremner (Asbestos), the main character, loses track of his girlfriend, as well as himself. Part of the story is about Abe trying to locate his beloved Amber. Nothing no longer however is A-B straightforward, as the town locals, as well as the unaffected ‘rest of the world’, attempt to deal with this grade 8 ‘state of full emergency’.

The story is told through the eyes of Abe the pensioner, talking to a hospital worker in an old age home. This juxtaposition of timelines is laced throughout the entire story. Abe’s lifelong friend Cal (Calcite) also helps out in periods as ‘stand in’ narrator. The story isn’t just about ‘the change’ however. Both Abe and Cal reflect apon everything from love of motown music to business practice, model aeroplane flying (especially!), as well as the general social interactions o' a'typical Dundonian character.

This isna' a straightforward read. But once you get it... well? ...you’ll have it.
