An explination of WoD, and disclaimer.
The WoD ( World of Darkness ) is a world setting that the RPG Gaming company, White Wolf (http://www.white-wolf.com) produced. This took the dark-horror genre to a new level. Think Bladerunner.., but rather then placed in the Future, the WoD setting is the modern world.
There was at one point only one version of teh WoD. But White Wolf ended its original WoD line of books and supplements. There is now a much more horrific and dark version of the WoD, in no way related to the old one. They have a wikipedia on their website that further explains the genre.

The Movie 'Underworld' is a good example of this. I have it on good word that the White Wolf Company and the producers of Underworld actually were working on a vampire movie based on a novel that White Wolf published. They broke company, but the producers of Underworld changed a few things to make the movie "theirs". A Lawsuit ensued between the two companies and was settled out of court ( last I heard ).
So Underworld is a PRIME example of what the WoD is about.
Most of my own Fanfiction is based in the old time-line and setting of White Wolf's WoD.
